Max wheel width (rear) ?

Post by monkeyra »

How do you work out what the maximum width wheel you can fit to the MR2? I'm guessing someone already has discovered this.

I've read this thread here ( http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=115337 ) which seems to show that a tyre (285/30/18) is possible.

I don't want to run 18's though, I want to stick with 16's.

So, is there some kind of formula for working it out?

And the reason why I want wider is because I need to fill out my Abflug wide arches which are now sitting here at home \:D/

I'd rather avoid spacers if I could. I've got stock Rev1 strut casings with Koni inserts.

Thanks for the link, will take a look :thumleft:

in that case dude, you may struggle with anything bigger than 235 or maybe 245

Going to fit 345/35/15 rears when I get round to changing the arches to get them in. Got 4 tyres just need the 12" wide wheels now.

265's have fitted on 9inch rear rims just fine. mr2's are very sensitive to offsets, lol amongst other things

Why's that? The chap in the link I provided above has fitted 285's with the same suspension setup?

I run 8j x17 rears with 255/40x17 rubber no clearance problems

Just noticed that's my car in that link, lol.

Maximum width I've seen actual pictures of is an autocross setup MR2 in the USA. He was running 285 front and 335 rear tyres but his arches were cut away to help them fit and he had a coilover setup. Obviously his tyres were way beyond the arches front and back but it was an impressive sight none the less

I wouldn't get too hung up worrying about running 17's or 18's if you are looking for wider rubber. Yes larger tyres will have more abrupt breakaway characteristics but the large increase in grip makes it more than worthwhile IMHO. Many people go on about poor handling with anything larger than a 15" or 16" wheel but seeing as I didn't buy my MR2 to go learn drifting in I don't really see this as a big problem

I'd agree there is a slight decrease in ride comfort running lower profile tyres but if you have a decent suspension (read that as not overly harsh) then it's not that uncomfortable at all.

16" MR2 tyre sizes are limited... the widest commonly found MR2 rear 16" tyre size is a 245/45/16. The widest commonly found front 16" tyre size would be a 225/45/16. These usually fit quite easily even under stock strut type setups.

255/35/16 exists but is a rare size and mostly phased out now.

The widest 16" rear tyre you'll find I think is the R-compound Kumho V70 265/45/16 tyre. It's a tallish tyre and it also requires at least an 8.5" wide rim to mount to which isn't so easy to come across.

If you are fitting Abflug flares then I'd imagine you'd pretty much have enough room under there for whatever you wanted in a 16" size - simply choose what size tyre setup you want and then find suitably sized rims to fit. You need to find out how much extra room the Abflugs give you and also decide what width rims you are getting before anyone can suggest what offset you want to get. HTH.
