Occaisional 'Unable to Connect' errors

Post by BenF »

Folks,

Just been doing some work on the database to correct the occasional 'unable to connect' errors you may have seen in the last couple of weeks.

If you find a page takes longer than 10 seconds to be generated, or you get a connection error message please post below the date, time and then the page generation time statistics from the bottom of the page in the format as below :

21:42, 13/5/09 : Page generation time: 0.7223s (PHP: 24% - SQL: 76%) - SQL queries: 31
21:42, 13/5/09 : Server Error : unable to connect to database

Cheers,

Ben

Ta. Been doing some digging and although the server is fine ( only 8 out of 1.5 million requests since last night took longer than 10 seconds to complete ) it maybe be due to someone attempting to guess the passwords to login to the backend database [-X

Hacker scum  In the words of Jeff Goldblum:

"I hope all your kids have small dicks...and that includes the girls!"

I think they'll be guessing for a while - Ben's password kung fu is strong.

OK, have made some further short term adjustments.

There are also going to be a few further changes that I will make on Monday / Tuesday night next week.

Yep, I've seen one as well today. I've just rebooted the server after some patches were installed - lets see if that helps.

The 'tweaks' I've planned will happen later in the week, and not tonight as originally planned. When I implement them I can do that without needing to take the website down.

Failing that, we will be moving servers in the next few weeks...

I'm getting the phpBB : Critical Error. Had it about twice today and twice yesterday.

Haven't made notes of time as just found this post.

Will keep a track if it happens again.

I normally just go back and the resubmit request. Thankfully Firefox holds on to the post you've just entered!

Yep, looks like even after the work last night things aren't improving.

I've made some further changes this evening, lets see how things go tomorrow.

Given we're just about to receive our new dedicated server for the next year, and the first thing I'm going to do is to move the database across to it this weekend to see if that helps.

If nothing else, its a more powerful box so we should see a further small improvement in page generation times.

phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database
...2 of these in the last 2 minutes. But I've been getting these messages fairly regularly for probably about a year now. I just thought it was something to do with my connection.

Ok, keep on posting if you think it's faster / slower, or you've got a connection refused problem.
