knocking noise from the rear wheel area

Post by IronMike »

My mk2 turbo started making a loud knocking noise from the rear drivers side as the car is moving. Nothing is hitting against the wheel and nothing visable wrong from looking up when the rear is jacked. The noise comes and goes but the knocking noise goes away when the clutch is depressed. Any ideas?

the noise going away when the clutch is pressed would usually indicate the clutch release bearing
never heard it describe as a knocking though, usually more of a screach or whirring

Might be a drive shaft? My thinking is that when you lift off the clutch the drive shaft is being loaded (and hence knocking), but when you dip the clutch it is unloaded and hence not knocking...like I say it's a guess though- I'm sure an expert would have a better idea :eye:

Doubt it's the release bearing- I would expect that to make a noise when you push the clutch down (ie when the bearing is being used)?

Probably worth jacking the car up and checking the wheel for play- might be a bearing, and the timing of the clutch is a coincidence... :-k

just back from garage and turns out it is the drive shaft. According to the garage its because my car is so low its knacked one side hence why its knocking. The knocking went away after the cars been jacked up  but will be due back soon  so need to source a new drive shaft the now
