Brake Calipers

Post by Pug_crew »

I have got some brake calipers that I am refurbishing before fitting on my car. Before I do so I want to take the pistons out but do not have access to an airline or anything like that to push them out.

Has anyone got any ideas how I can get them out?

The rear screw out.

Not totally sure about front, but IIRC you will need hydralic pressure to push them out. Have you a bicycle tyre pump and fittings? or could you connect temp to your car? Or make a connector and use a petrol stations air line??

Any kind of pump (bicycle/footpump) will do the job, just cut a small (5-10mm ish) length of fuel pipe size rubber pipe and use it to seal between the pump and the caliper. job done!

You may need 3 hands at this point, but it is possible...

Thanks for the responses.

Couldn't work out how to make a connector so ended up removing the rubber the fits around the piston and then using a couple of very old (blunt) wood chisles managed to lever the piston up using the channel the rubber came out of.

Took some time and a grazed knuckle so I wish I'd had read your message dopiaza before I started this morning!

It's the hard way, but the way I have done it in the past. Fortunately without scraping knuckles though :D
