Is a clutch change a big job?

Post by Dean_82 »

My car is currently undergoing a clutch change through a friend. Now apparantly the mechanics are saying its a big job and that they need to remove so much to do it? Is it true the starter motor needs to come out?
Im only paying for 4.5hrs labour @50% of the usual price so I am very fortunate. But I just wasnt aware so much was involved...?

is the car an N/A or a turbo ?

it is quite a time consuming job so 4.5 hours seems very fair, especially if you are getting a 50% discount on labour :thumleft:

I have changed or clutches on n/a mr2 cars 4.5 hours is about right for a book time on labour. The first one took me about 5 hours but after a couple I took about 3 hours. Its a case of knowing what you need to take off ,knowing where all the top bell-housing bolts are and if you are tall with long arms it helps to reach into the engine bay.

Turbos - I'd actually say 6 to 8 hours... depends on mods and what not thats surrounding the gearbox .. I've got oil coolers / catch cans / boost controllers etc... which is all time consuming .....

If I remember, there is a bolt behind the starter that holds the bell housing the 5hit plate.. which is attached to the block....

Starters easy to remove.. 2 main bolts and electrical disconnection... Often the alloy casing corrodes a little against the bell housing.. and thus practically fusing it into place.... clobber it with a rubber mallet will dislodge it.....

They're a pain in the butt to change ( engine needs supporting ) and need a strong pair of hands....
