Tyres

Post by rowey200 »

Just about to order up some new from tyres for the front of my Mk2. Have always got on well with Toyo Proxes TR1's on other cars (they can be had for £33 :thumleft: in 195/50/15), so going to put a pair of these on.

The car is on standard rims, and currently wearing 195/55/15, I presume dropping to a 50 profile (195/50/15) will be fine?

Any comments welcome :thumleft:

Have a look at falken 452s aswell. I switched from T1Rs to these, and they are better imo. The sidewalls on the toyos are just not stiff enough for the MR2 imo.

.....was that in 15", as I can't seem to find 452's in 15", only bigger. I used to run this on a previous car and was always impressed with them

I've not found a better road tyre than a Good Year F1 ! :D I've tried both the above mentioned and dont come near the F1's for all round performance. :thumleft:

Yeah the F1s are great too, but a bit more pricey. :thumleft:

they may be great, but that doesnt help this chap as they dont make them in the rear stock size i dont believe.

toyo are ok, and *probably* the best you can get for a good price in the stock 15" size.

...you've hit the nail on the head there mate - getting hold of 225/50/15 rubber is not that easy... [-(

Think if I were the OP I'd also be looking at the toyo in a 205/50/15. Depends how you like your car to behave but it should take out a little of the understeer and leave a more neutral car. Closer to the correct RR also. I certainly prefer it to the 195/55.

Thanks for the info.

That's basically what i'm lookingfor, to reduce some of the understeer....might go for a 205 then :thumleft:

No worries mate. If you're on standard sized T1-Rs at the rear also try upping the pressures if you can feel them 'moving around' a bit. I use 37psi rear and 32psi front (225/50/15 and 205/50/15) and it certainly seems to have corrected for the 225s very soft sidewall, well inside guide pressures also.

I'm with Allan here!

I'v got a set of Hankook RS2's and i am absolutely over the moon with them! So much confidence in them whether its wet or dry!!!

I have never liked the T1R's....even on my Polo GTI with only 135bhp (fair enough in a light car) the tyres would spin so easily in the wet.....even on half throttle! never liked them tyres and will not be going back! I'll be sticking to Hankook RS2's and if i ever go for a change (not likely) then i'll give either Goodyear Eagle F1's or Uniroyal Rainsports.

Think you guys are missing the point. It's no good saying how brilliant F1s are (or any other for that matter) if they can't be had in the sizes required.
T1 -Rs are a very fine tyre IF inflated correctly which is particularly true on the rears.

I had those on my rev 5 turbo and imo were better than the original 195's, it definitely makes the car more neutral.

I've had T1S, T1R & Falken 452's on my tubby. They're all decent tyres. The T1's dont last very long though, something that has been noticed by a few other members IIRC?

The Falkens are only a few thou old at the moment so not sure how they're going. Best check soon I guess :thumleft:

From my experience of the Goodyear F1 gsd3 tyres on my A4 (205/55R16), they are fantastic in the dry and above average in the wet, *until* they get to about 3.0 to 3.5 mm of tread left, then they started tramlining and wandering all over the road on me. The pressures were the same all of the time - I'm pedantic about that. When I changed them out for Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres, the wandering went away...

I know the application is different for the MR2, but the tyre construction isn't changing that much between the sizes.

Just an observation..

I believe that the Goodyear Eagle F1s are purchaseable for the 15" rims, certainly when you use 205s on the front. That's because I have them on my two. It's true that upping the width 1cm does neutralise the car and I'd not go back to 195s for the front.

WHen I imported the car back in 2000 the first set of new tyres I bought were the Bridgestone S02 Pole Position and they were so sticky, dry and wet. It was a shame you could only get up to 5,000 miles out of a set but as the car has never been an everyday car, I never run it in the Winter and when the roads are salty, I've never really cared. The SO3 replacement was certainly not as good.

Since then I've always used the Goodyear Eagles and as mentioned, that's on standard rims and they're freely available in the Midlands, off of the shelf.
