Will 255.50.16 fit the rear without spacers

Post by Ja99a »

Hey guys anyone know if I can get 255.50.16 on a 16 x 8 jj 35 offset wheel.

They are Advan AVS VS5 rims.

I run 245 45 16's on the rear. I would of thought 255's will go though....

Isn't a 50 profile too big? Surely a 45 or 40 is a better bet?

255/50 on an 8j rim will seriously 'baloon' badly, its a seriously bad tyre choice for the rim

i have 245/45 and id say thats the max on 8j

oh and a 35 offset on 245/45/16 8j just touches the arches, a 255 on a 35 will need arch work for defo.

Just checked on the wheel and tyre bibles and the best profile for a 255 is a 255/40/16 which is less than 0.75% out from the standard 225/50/15s rolling radius. That wants a rim of between 8.5 and 10 inches.
If I were the OP I'd be looking at a 245 width as a maximum on an 8" width rim.

Just checked again and a 245/40/16 is only 0.6% out in terms of rolling radius and suits a rim of between 8 and 9.5 inches. Still a bit 'pinched' but that should give a little more progressive breakaway (or more 'feel') than the same tyre on a wider rim with a 'straighter' sidewall.
What have you got on the fronts mate... you really only want a max difference of 30mm and I reckon 20mm is better for a neutral handling car.

aspect ratio alters the rim width, 45 and under is the change
size-----------radius----circumference--width----actual at speedo 70
255/50/16 -- 331 mm--- 2078 mm -- 7.0 inch -- 76.4

agreed 40 profile is best for stock match. 255 on a 9inch rim ET35 will rub the arch but on an 8, should clear

But at a 40 profile it requires a wider rim than 8". On a 50 profile it has a RR over 9% greater than the standard tyre... that's an awful lot.
Basically OP you want a wider rim or to keep the tyre width to 245.

agreed, I maybe didn't explain it well but the OP's original tyre choice would fit the rim, however as you say whether he should is a totally different problem :D

well are we saying 255.50.16 fits and clears the arch with a lot of ballooning? Sounds Ideal for drag racing to me :)

Ja99a... your 255/50/16 will fit OK on an 8" rim but the radius is much larger than the stock size. Speedo will be well out (nearly 10%) and I hate to think what it will do to your acceleration. Also you'll need a 225 width on the front if you want it to be balanced.
