Mk1.5 and Mk1.6 on track

At Knockhill and as usual, it was xxxx raining. Touch on the scary side.

Great to see a 1.5 and 1.6 being used out the track.

Have to say you driving the 1.6 - looked to be a real handfull ! What tyres do you have on the rear, and what width ?

They both sound great but I think I will get a Peugeot 205 for the track as the white one in the videos overtook both cars

Well they are twitchy as hell with all that power and so little grip in the wet,so not exactly a true reflection of what they are capable of.

Paul, what do people typically fit to the rear of a converted Mk1 - later Roadster 16" alloys with 225's assuming there is space ?

Early Mk2 turbos with 205 rears could spin them up easily in the wet.

Most go for a 16" wheel with at least 225 rubber,others go for 17" like myself and fit anything up to 255's but they of course need arch mods.

The offset of the wheel is of course key,but most get away with a 225 on a mk1 turbo or mk1 v6.

I had a set of 15" rover wheels i'm going to use for track work, they have Pirelli P600's which have stood outside for about a year on them. I took the car out on track to try them for the first time and they were awfull to say the least!

No idea if it was the make of tyres or the age of them or what but it was like dancing on ice.

Murf took me out in his 1.5 and the difference in grip was unbelievable, so i swapped back to my 16" Azev's which have 205 tyres on. This was a huge improvement over the pirelli's but still a touch scary in the wet.

This was just in the last hour so i didn't get much time to work with the better tyres but i was slowly getting quicker and more confident after crawling round at the start.

That few laps is my 1st outing after swapping the tyres. I was slowing down and letting most people past, more because i was scared of wiping them out on the way out/into the corner than being overtaken.

I can't wait to get it out in the dry. I'll get a rear facing camera for a few laps too.

Expect to see us out on track plenty this year


As for the 205 I'd much rather run a FWD car round a wet knockhill than a mid engined RWD car.

Those Evo's were running near enough full pelt aswell. Mental behaviour in the wet.

I'm in no doubt my driving skills aren't the best on track but am sure we'll see more cars going the other way next time out

The 205 was actually silver, not sure what engine was in it but it was fully caged and pretty quick. That was my cool down lap that he passed me on though
Surprised a few rather quick cars, VX220 couldnt keep up on the straights. Exige club racer had to be let past at the end of the straight as it was soo much quicker in the corners. Seemed to be pretty even with the skylines too. Supercharged integra, i was keeping up with. Evo's passed me like i was standing still!!
Deffo the driver letting the car down, 'twas my 1st trackday!
Back for more, hopefully in the dry.

By then:
Water injection
Decent rear tyres (not the Nankangs currently on the rear )
Investigate front brake judder.
Get the instructor to go round with me and teach me to drive!!

Funniest event of the day was after signing on, the guy gave me a round red sticker.
Me: Where do i stick this?
Instructor 1: Front of the car.

We all had to start somewhere and as long as you had a good time and learned a thing or two - and will do more, all is good

Looking to book up for the 1st of may. Got a few things to do before then aswell.

- Replace driveshaft with celica supported shaft,
- Get some decent tyres on the track wheels,
- Replace the gear selector cable,
- Re-align the slightly squinty exhaust,
- Find a gearbox to put my longer final drive and LSD in and fit the bu88er.

Can't wait to get out there again and just praying it's dry!

Get some r888s and you will notice a HUGE difference mate!!!!!!! They are so good!!!!

Can't wait to get out there again and just praying it's dry!

It's more fun in the wet plus it's way cheaper on fuel, tyres and brakes. I always want wet days.
