MOT Handbrake Test with an LSD???

Post by Steve-O 2007 »

I was just thinking, since they cant put cars with LSD's onto the brake testers, how do they do a Handbrake test???

Do they just go on a hill and see if it holds???

Just wondering as I dont want somoen to take my car on a steep slope and end up smashing the bottom of my border bumper!!

Thanks :thumleft:

Mine has always been done on a brake roller. Hasn't damaged the diff yet, AFAIK

dont know but mine has a non standard LSD in

Its annoying, I used to work somewhere that did MOT's so I could watch my car getting done while I worked, Now I will have to drop it off with them, luckilly theres no idiots that will mess around in it but still the thought of leaving it somewhere on its own :(

They can brake the diff doing it on thr brake tester. My MOT place have a little wooden box they put on the floor and drive just around the yard. dont know whats in it but it must be some kind a mechanical meter.

Most cars with either constant 4 wheel drive or limited slip differential are not suitable for a standard mot brake roller test. The picture posted is called a de-celerometer and is used in these cases or as a secondary back up for 24 hours should the brake rollers be out of action. When a test is registered the vt40 check sheet which lists the vehicle details normally states if a brake roller test can or can not be done but it often says "a brake roller test can be done if the vehicle has traction contol turned off or is a type that may not be damaged by brake roller test.In other words it is up to and the resposibility of the tester to get it right. When I am testing I normally check for an lsd when the driven wheels are off the floor.Normally if you turn one wheel one direction the other side wheel rotates in other direction easily. With most lsd equipped cars the wheels try and move same direction but even that is not gospel
