[Mk2] [Turbo] Knock on full Lock

Post by okolatsis »

Hi All,

I get one loud knock sound on full lock. This only happens on drivers front wheel, any ideas what this could be?. This doesnt happen over speed bumps (yes they have them in Cyprus!!!) ](*,)

I believe it could be the ball joints. Not 100% sure though.

I have this too (knock when the steering reaches maximum lock and then again when I turn it back) If the spring is popping out like you say, how would you fix it?

its the c.v joint theres 2 on each driveshaft an inner (near the steering rack )and an outer (near the brake disc )i bet you £100 its one of these.a "clicking/knocking "sound on fuill lock ,but ok when the wheels are straight ahead ??c.vjoint defo.its a bit of a pain to do these ,do them both just to make sure .oh and if it happens both ways (turning left AND right )both sides are mullered ,thats 4 joints you need ,dont worry theyre not expensive (less than a tenner each )but as said its a fiddly job .if youre doing them yourselv youl need the right tools ,or in a garage about 2 hrs a side £-£100-150?

It only clunks once when it reaches full lock, and once when I turn the wheel away from full lock. It doesn't make any noise when the car is moving with full lock on, is this the same thing you are thinking about mate?

Get the front end in the air and get somebody to turn the wheel whilst you look/listen. If it's the spring you should be able to see it... mind you it's more of a 'boing' than a 'clunk'.
Hope you both get it sorted.

Mine only started clunking after we had the suspension apart to replace a leaking shock, ball joints and drop links.

 It's a RWD car - there are no CV joints/driveshafts at the front.

It's most likely the steering rack, I'm afraid. I had it too and that's what it was on mine. It could simply be the inner or outer track rod ends (you'll need to feel under the rubber gaiter to check the inner ones) but my money's on a fubar'd rack.

Mine currently knocks like this. Ive had the suspension apart recently and its definitely the topmount on mine :thumleft:

I had this problem once. Same as you, only used to do it when going forward or backward really slowly on full lock. With me it also felt like one of the wheels was being dragged across the road at a funny angle instead of rotating smoothly. With me it turned out to be my front camber settings were way out of spec, got these sorted and it fixed the problem. Not sure if yours is the same problem but it might be worth getting your alignment settings checked. Another culprit would be the topmounts.

Defo its the top mount to be sure, the bearings collapse within the rubber mount with age.
If it was a FWD then it could be a CV joint, but its not.

Had the same problem on mine. Replaced front top mount, no more noise.
