how to tell a forged engine?

Post by afennell »

Is there any way to tell if a car has a forged engine other then the paper work or taking the engine apart?

Are there any symptom or tell tail signs when running or starting up. I once heard they are slightly noisier on start-up but I can’t see that been the case.

Forged pistons do tend to suffer with a little more piston slap on a cold start up but it's not exactly a deffinate way of telling!

or you could use a boroscope to view the piston tops

if you did have a look how would you tell the difference.
Would there be markings to look for?

I'd guess it would be difficult to tell by inspecting the piston crowns unless it's a really recent bulid as they will be coated in carbon anyway? :-k

Personally, if in doubt before putting some serious boosting through, sump needs to come off and inspect from below .. as other have mentioned, the crown often gets a little too carboned up for an assessment...

think it was on rashs orginal import thread, it said you guys looked and they didnt look stock, but wernt sure exactly what they were.
just thought it may have been yourself that looked.

from what i can see, they do look shiney where there isnt carbon build up.
thin build up to, nothing like the crazy build up i had on my rev2 pistons (i cleaned them up)

Also, what is the life span in general compared to normal engines? I've heard from a reliable MR2 tuner that I would most likely need a rebuild after between 12-20k miles depending on driving style etc. What exactly would this rebuild consist of most of the time? Just bearings and a few small easily worn components? :-k
