911 Carrera

Post by Graeme Shaw »

Noticed a black 911 behind me this morning while doing my usual runa round in my mr2 which is not normal as I am usually in my van.
Any way, we came off the A1 to a roundabout, with him pretty close, which then leads onto a, usually quiet, duel carraigeway.
Being in second gear, and with wet roads, I straightened up, I squirted the throttle to see if he was playing as it was pretty wet.
It was clear he was, so up into third and foot to the floor. At this point he was about 3 car lengths behind.
With very little wheel spin, I was surprised to slowly pull away from it, right up through the gears to fifth at which point I backed off.
I mean I certainly didnt "blow its doors off" (lol) but definatly, very slowly eased away from him.
He then weaved behind me flashing his lights, thinking he could be a nut job, I pulled over to let him by, after proving my point.
He pulls alongside, pointing at my car and givimg me the thumbs up! Never had that happen before! :D

We then hit another roundabout, with him in front. After he had straightened up after the roundabout, he went for it, as did I, and again same result, but had to back off to avoid getting too close to him.
We then hit traffic (not literally!), and slowed down to about 50mph. Once the traffic cleared, he was off again with me close behind, still backing off, I decided to let him go at which point he flashed his hazzards and I returned the salute with a flash of my lights.

Could of swore it had the "4s" on the back, but after looking at the stats I think I would have done well to even stay close to it. Maybe was a standard one? Maybe he was wheelspinning, who knows?
Not saying the mr is the fastest car in the world, and Id much rather have the 911, but gotta say after not driving the mr for a while and kinda falling out of luv with it, my luv has been rekindled and it reminds me why I bought it. And for a car worth about 4k (if that) theres not much comes close for the money. :thumleft:

I had a play with a Carerra S couple of years ago. Mines about 300bhp, they're about 350 I believe?

I kept up with it fairly ok but when the roads became tricky it vanished. They really are as good as people say they are.

Friend has a C4s on a 53 plate... so just before the facelift and the new powerfuller engine... Thing handles brilliant and is a really nice car, but somewhat lacking in forward acceleration .. dont get me wrong.. its not slow.. but when he can't get past my standard 200sx + 1 bar... I have to laugh...

He can only dream of keeping up with my mouldy stilton cheese wedge !! :clown:

I have never managed to have a good race with one of these, only straight line stuff, some guy tried to blow me away in his 58 plate one, i was ripping his back bumper off with hardly any traction at all.

They are awesome cars tho, I drove a 911 turbo at bruntingthorpe race track a couple of years ago and it was really nice.

Even the GT3 which is an NA is now over 400 bhp, they're all getting faster with each generation.

Have to agree the ones I've test driven are no faster than a mildly tuned turbo in a straight line - they really win on the turns and the braking though. Simply an awesome sports AND day to day car IMHO.

The one I was playing with didnt brake, that's what took me. I had to back off and he just kept it going. Either that or his brake lights dont work and I out braked him. But I doubt it.

Their cornering ability is legend. :thumleft: One test drive I took it fairly spiritedly around a roundabout a few times...not even a slight loss of grip. Only stopped as husband complained he felt sick.

Wow :thumleft: A post on IMOC about Porsches and no ones slated them or said they prefer their MR2 :D

My friends got a Revo Chipped & fancy Exhaust 996 Turbo 520bhp, sounds like a Jet taking off when he boots it great car, he track days and hill climbs it so it gets properly abused. The prices of the 996's have collapsed as the n/a ones have apparently vastly blown out of proportion engine problems and everyone prefers the look of the previous 993 or the newer 997. You can get n/a's for £17K now and Turbos from £30K, bargin if you've got the cash.

'97 mk1 Mazda Eunos Turbo track car with 260bhp/ton - soon more as Chris Wilsons going to build me an engine over the winter :o) .

Had a couple of runs with both the 996 & 997 Carrera. You will keep up with relative ease in a rev 3 turbo with basic bolt ons upped boost.

But on the corners

I do prefer my mr2, the porsche is a blast to drive and will obviously handle better, I just like the feeling that my car wants to kill me lol

Know which it would be for me. Yea I know Porsches are technically better than MR2s and have more 'pedigree' but cars looks are a far more important factor to me and with a few k you would have a faster car anyway. It's what you like at the end of the day.

I just did a google search and got that picture. You've just put the worst possible picture out of them on there.
What about these pictures?

Or a turbo - knocks spots of any MR2 and doesnt need thousands of pounds of body work.

I will have a Porsche 911 in the not too distant future if I get a chance. :)
Orange 997 lives near to me, and if he ever sells it I'll be there with my life savings, LOL.

After driving them it's got to be done. Just got to do the R34 Skyline thing first. :clown:
