[All] [Generic] Rota Alloys -Any Good?

Post by Jim S »

Guys,

Need some new wheels for my 2 as one of my 17s is buckled and they don't make them anymore.

Was considering some Rota Grids in 16" (to avoid future buckling!!) but have seen some horror stories on the web about Rota wheels basically falling apart and twisting.

I'm not sure how genuine these are though, as even high quality wheels will break if you hit them hard enough!

What do people think? Has anyone got a set and have they been ok?

Cheers,

Jim.

I know a few people that run Rota wheels. They've never been able to say a bad word about them. :thumleft:

I have two sets and all OK. They are light so if you hit a curb they are going to bend.

Light is good!!

My Mille Miglias look great, but weigh a ton and still got bent by a big pot hole.

I might by 5 this time as it's cheaper than changing the lot when you find your wheels discontinued!!

Rota Grids aplenty in my garage...

I've had no problems whatsoever when they got on the car.
IIRC I have 20mm spacers rear and 14mm front, so budget for that too if the offsets are out...

wow, pmsl...

i asume ALL of those hit a curb (DAM HARD), dont just explode for no reason.

my rotas were great, lightweight, staggered...
did get a little polished lip corrosion, but you ge tthat on most wheels.

There are the scare stories!! That's what prompted me to ask!

Depending on what actually happened to those wheels before they broke it may or may not be anything to worry about!

The swirled spokes and changed offset wheels were done on a trackday with zero impacts, heat from the brakes softened them such that braking and cornering forces bent them.

The ITR was boosted and had done a lot of 1/4 miles.

Rotas have a reputation for cracking and buckling easily, just on poor road surfaces with no big impacts, impacts they disintergrate easily.

Thing is what do you expect? A lot of Rota designs copy Forged designs but without forging. A set of VOLK CN37 or whatever the red Rotas are a copy of are about £300 each and Forged, the rotas £350 for a set of 4,.. but they are just cast. You get what you pay for.

I think its the particularly light weight ones that are the "risky" ones, Grids and the fat spoked ones should be stronger. If you look at the pic of the black rim below, those 5 spokes that snapped are joined to the rim by so little...
