[Mk2] [Turbo] Extended Wheel Studs

Post by IainF355 »

Hi All,
I need some help with extended wheelstuds!
I've bought some recently and they appear a little different around the spline/shoulder region.. Instead of having a little taper into the spline like the originals there's just a step. The splined section is a little longer as well.
I've tried fitting them, by simply tightening a nut up on them, but seem to encounter a bit more resistance that I feel is wise, and they're not fully home yet either. At this point I wondered whether the difference is crucial.
(Should I just crank them up and hope they tighten right into the hub?).
If anyone has any experience of buying good/bad extended wheelsutds - and fitting them - your advice would be most welcome!
Cheers,
Iain

I had the same problem when changing mine. I found they were just too tight & didn't want to risk stripping threads, damaging nuts or having them not pulled up flush so filed the splines down slightly, did the trick. :thumleft:

That's a pretty good call Shamus.
I might give that a whirl. It's daft to think it's necessary really but it's better than splitting a hub #-o
Anyone else have any experience with this?
Cheers,
Iain

Thanks for the link KrisB. (Mine are also +20mm) They look the best I've seen, and certainly seem pretty similar to the design of the originals.
Have you fitted yours yet - did they go in ok?
I think I'll give the file a whirl and see how I get on. If I'm not happy with the result I think the ones you have will be the way to go.
Cheers,
Iain.

what i did to pull mine thru was:

put the new stud in the hub, slide a large nut over the thread. this must be loose and not wind onto the thread so this acts as a spacer.
wind on a nut, once it starts to get very hard then use a breaker for extra leverage to tighten and pull the stud into the hub.

keep an eye on it and if your unsure then stop and hammer out with a copper ended mallet
