[Mk2] [Turbo] keep the F-con sz or go stand for a alone ecu ?

Post by Stu. »

currnetly running an F-con sz and i'm 99% sure this is a piggy back ecu as the standard ecu is still there as well

it was fitted to the car in 2004 by Owen developments

the cars a rev 2 turbo and standard other than a de cat and filter.

we are planning to go for big power so would the ecu be able to cope with this or should we swap it for a fully stand alond such as the link of apexi type?

some info about your piggy back

HKS offers pre-programmed vehicle and tuning level specific plug-in systems. These are true plug and play units with vehicle specific wiring harnesses and are calibrated for a specific vehicle and its particular level of modification. Basic programs are calibrated for bolt-on modification levels of intake, exhaust, boost controller, down pipe etc. These F-CON S units will offer the correct fuel and ignition curves to maximize the potential that the bolt-on modifications can offer. For certain applications, pre-programmed units will be available for vehicles with modifications, such as turbo upgrades, larger injectors, and camshafts.

Yea i would say get rid of it chap as it's not a F-CON V PRO.

Allot of people on here use link so it's probably the best to go with.

so basically my ECU is just for removing the speed limiter and fuel cut etc..

and is not capable of dealing with further engine modifications?

No. F-cons are an extremely good piece of kit, as far as i have heard , in japan they are rated along side things like Hydra, Motec etc BUT thats in japan where every other car tuner can map these without problem.

Over in the uk, there is prob about 4 companies that have the software to map F-con ecu's and because of that they charge a fekkkkin bomb to do so!!

I think to map a f-con, your looking at about a grand. cannot remember where i heard that from but if its true, then get a link and get that mapped instead- it will prob only cost a lil more but will be much cheaper to map in the future if you decide to do more mods to the engine.

Just out of curiosity (if you are still about), what did you end up doing about the SZ?

We brought another MR2 that was already highly tuned but I’m still running the mr2 with the F-con sz fitted the car drives really well, power comes in nice and smooth and I seem to be getting good fuel economy for a turbo

But I’d also like to know any more information about the F-con sz ,if any one else using them and also how far I could modify the engine with an f-con sz ecu fitted.

I’d like to get the car remapped as I have a funny feeling although I always use super unleaded that the reason the ecu was originally fitted was to run the car on standard unleaded (seemed to be the trend a few years back when super unleaded wasn’t as readily available)

cheers

Ahh. I only ask because I purchased an SZ a while back off a rev2 turbo with a view to getting it fitted into my rev1, but I struggled to find a tuner so put the idea on hold. I was then told that the 350 BHP that I was looking for was unrealistic from a piggyback controller so started looking for stand alone options, but if you know any different.....

Anyway, bottom line is, there is not enough info for these units available in the UK!
