[Mk2] [NA] Rotten Chassis brace? - Help Required

Post by BoJohannsen »

Hi,

Can any of you tell me what the brace highlighted in the picture is called?

Image

Is it replaceable? If so where can I get a couple as the ones on my G-Limited a rotten with a capital R. I guess they're not essential or safety critical as it passed it's MOT okay.

Many thanks.

I don't know for certain, but am guessing it's the one of the two that commonly rust. IIRC they're around £16 each from Toyota.

Can't see your pic as imageshack server seems to have been put on dial-up today ](*,)

as said above £16 from toyota think its called a chassis brace as said common to break i xxxx myself when i found mine completely rusted away,
20 min job to fit undo two 10mm bolts that hold plastic undertray then you can slide your hand in to undo the bolt at each end, when i get round to getting a new welder i wish to make solid ones of these as thay are hollow and badly designed water gets inside and thay rust from the inside out its a tube with squashed ends with two holes drilled in it crap :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Thanks for the advice guys. There is a Toyota garage just round the corner from my work so I'll maybe just pop in there and order a couple.

Just out of interest does anyone know if uprated/aftermarket braces are available? I think they're available for the Mk3 but haven't come across any for the Mk2.

Thanks again,

Steve.

These things seem pretty prone to rust, mine had rusted so much at the bolt hole point I managed to put my finger through em.

Wasnt these only fitted to some cars? Mine are rotted but i was under the impression that they are not really needed from earlier posts.

I'm pretty sure they were fitted to all cars.

It's the brace above the engine that was only on some cars (mainly t-bars).

Car makers dont usually add parts that are not required on grounds of cost - reckon theyre needed and as far as I'm aware they were on all cars :-)

not that i know of. they would have to be as light as the originals but not prone to disappering into an unkown vortex lmao. to be fair mine were 16 yr old and without the rear underbelly for god knows how long
