Super Charger Big Pulley Kit?

Post by t-bar89 »

Hi All,

I'm looking at purchasing a big pulley kit from fensport... but before I do, I have read that the tensioner pulleys are liable to break. (being a cheap plastic ford part)

Are there any other manufacturers making these big pulley kits? Are they better than the fensport? Or do I just buy fensport and hope the tensioner is okay? :-k

Any advice would be great. As long as it gets me to circa 180bhp

Cheers, Pete.

yeah, I've seen that is what Paul @ woodsport uses for the tensioner. Just wondered about any alternatives if any to the fensport kit.

Where would I find a camry v6 pulley?

ah ha, so you've returned to the mk1 fold then pete!

Did you sell the mk2 yet or are you facing the same dilemma as me, in having to decide which one to drive next?

It seems that the getting a new car bug didn't completely go away for ya then!

A good option , as
a large pully gives you an extra 30 bhp.
A cheep way to gain an extra 20% - 1/5th of power
Fensort large pulley would be a poor choise though, as their tensioner pulley, is known as the jelly pulley
(as it drops to bits regularly)
I got my large pulley from NST in the USA.
http://www.nonstoptuning.com/
The pulley is 4mls bigger, at 180mm
and the rest of the kit is top notch too.
Also works out cheeper, including shipping.

One thing to add, you need to remove the ABV from the equation, not do the crappy vacuum bodge as described in many places.

I had an early big pulley from fensport and had no problems whatsoever with teh idler in 30K miles which included a lot of track work.

Cheers!

I knew that one grade colder spark plugs were needed but hadn't realised about the ABV.

Are there any other mods that need to be done? Whats the best way to block off the abv? blanking plate?

Pete, just blank it off yes. You can either put a 'bung' in the bit of pipe that goes to the bottom of the ABV or what I did was get an SC outlet pipe made up with no 'tee' off to the ABV.

Pete (Ninja!), I'm pretty sure I've got a spare blanking plate.. it could be anywhere though as I've moved house twice this year. I'll have a look this week for you :thumleft:

I have bought the NST pulley kit. It came to £189 including shipping over from America.

Seems to say all the right things, 180mm pulley, inreases boost from 8psi to 13.5psi.

Remember that boost figures is a misnomer. Boost pressure increases not only with how fast the SC is spinning but also with teh inlet temperature and air of course expands as it gets hotter providing a less dense charge which actually decreases power.

Interestingly enough with a Fensport pulley on my car and the later spec AE92 engine with correspondingly smaller SC pulley my car seemed to produce the most power at an indicated 11.5-12psi. As soon as it went over that I lost power due to heatsoak.

Hi,

I also did the 'cheap hack' method of ABV mod and it's been fine but would also like to do it 'properly' now the engine is out being done up ready to go into a new body (whenever that is).

Also I was suprised to find my FENSPORT tensioner (OS pulley) to be in very good shape (fitted in 2001!) I had a noise I thought was this on the way out but it seems very solid/quiet one I had it out to look at... I think the main thing is to make sure it's tight and can't move back and forth on the spindle as that possibly causes them to fail faster (I agree they are not great though).

Oh and Hi David! Long time no comms (Paul T from the old MR2 Supercharger Mailing List - you may or may not remember me ;) )

Cheers Lauren, I won't hold my breath expecting 13.5psi then!

As long as it gets me to the 170bhp-175bhp mark though? As it claims a 30bhp increase...

Well I've seen an engine with big pulley, air filter and exhaust make a solid 180bhp, so don't see why your one wouldn't in all honesty.

Sorry I can't remember how to do the t-piece mod, i've kind of deleted it from my memory. Well it was 7 years ago!!
