Considering a SuperCharger on ebay.

Post by GaryR »

Hi,

I've been looking for a low-mileage blue t-bar (with black interior) for a while now without much luck and now the gods of mid-life crisis have posted a blue t-bar surpercharger on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Toyota-Mr2-mk1-T- ... .m14.l1318

Looks ok from the photo's, although I'm not keen on the wheels - what sort of things should I be on the look out for if I go and view it ? I've seen quite a few NA's and know roughly what goes wrong with them, are there other things I need to consider with a SC ?

Thanks in advance,
Gary.

The owner is known on a few forums. It sounds like a genuine car and from what I have seen posted on another forum, it's worth it.

Not many manual SC's about now. Just a pity it doesn't have an LSD.

Like with all MR2's make sure the coolant is nice and clean and it's not been run on water. Check the oil is faily clean and not too black. Check for blue and/or black smoke from exhaust on startup from an ice cold engine.

Try check under the sills and in the front wing near the lower door hinge for rust/rot.

Just check it & drive it as you would any other MR2 really... Although be prepared for the extra power from the added Fensport Pulley & ABV mod 8) Don't put power down too hard if you're on a roundabout and it's damp

The wheels are not that bad
I like white wheels on the Mica Blue cars (Our mica Blue SC will be donning a set very soon (just waiting for tyres to be fitted to them) 8)

Thanks for the information, can you point me to the other forum?

Also, what's a ABV mod, (roughly) how much would the insurance be and where would be a good place to get a quote from?

Cheers,
Gary.

http://www.mr2supercharger.com/ABVmods.html

It basically allows more boost as the standard system will only allow 8-10psi.

Was also interested in this first time round - cant believe he has had a time waster!

Was tempted to throw a bid in, but its just too far for me to consider going to view it.

Anyone else know the car at all?

Insurace try A-plan (thatcham branch - v helpful. my cheapest quote by far) or Sky (but couldn't insure mine as it was kept on road not driveway)

Yes, I almost bid on this. Bidding ended Saturday morning with a closing bid of £2250.

The seller, Simon, offered for me to view the car on Friday. Though I didn't he obviously has nothing to hide. His description is quite detailed and he seems very pleasant to deal with.

Yes, I was bit put off by the wheels but it's apparently got solid rear arches, ABV mod and Camry idler pulley - an intersting spec. In short, if goes for that sort of money again it's a bargain. New door, respray bonnet. fix window and fix couple of monor things and for £3K someone will have a brilliant SC. I'm trying to sell another MR2 so slightly wrong time for me.

For £3k you'd at least want an LSD  8) :thumleft:

If anyone is put off by the wheels, I'll buy them off you if you buy the car :thumleft:

Although that is a crap way of doing it. The ABV mod is not an added value modification as you can do it in couple of mins to any SC just by swapping vacuum hoses around.

Far better to blank off the ABV completely. Do it properly. :+:

Shame no LSD... makes the world of difference IMO. Though if you are just road driving its not the end of the world, but is far less fun.

Still at least it hasn't got a blue interior. :+:

I thought it was only the SE's that were diamond polished?

Ah, so the teardrops from my NA that I spent 2 weeks restoring will look a bit odd. :(

I'm still doing the 'man-maths' to figure out if I can afford it. In terms of insurance quote, what do I say when they ask 'Does it have any mods?' I'm guessing that the larger pulley and ABV will need to be decleared, anything else I should mention ?

Cheers,
Gary.

Yep. Probably not worth continuing.

Declare any mods basically, is what i'd say. They won't understand half of it anyway.
