evo drivers

Post by dbiagioni »

Iv raced a couple of evos in my rev3 turbo running 1.25bar, it was a tuned evo 7 i was racing most recently.

My turbo was quicker in a straight line, however, the evo driver was a complete lunatic and was willing to push his car alot futher than mine round corners and braking much later so he did get ahead but only just over a 2 to 3 mile race.

I think it depends A how much bottle you have, B how much of an idiot you are and C how hard you push and want to abuse your car.

Anyway the mr2 is an amazing looking car and i know whatid prefer to have!

I've raced my friends scooby which is the '03 sti, and had and advantage fairly easily over him, this was street racing but i think he doesn't really know how to drive. i drove his car and the handling is sweet much more stable than the two.

Also raced a stranger in the same type of scooby, and this was purely straight line, upto a ton and i just had the edge over him as i gained so close to him i had to lift off.

Mine's a standard rev3 which isn't running 100% either.
I reckon the way the two puts down power is amazing, but i have to say the evo/scoob is a much better handling car and one i would feel alot more comfortable in pushing around the bends.
Straight line i feel very confident in my two performance.

Older scoobies you never know because like the MR2 many of them are modified. The newer ones however are generally standard other than prodrive performance packs etc, I raced a brand new WRX STi before i fitted the hybrid turbo and I was edging him in acceleration (20-60/70mph), he seemed quite surprised. I had a bit of a play with a 2 year old WRX on a couple of dual carraigeways through milton keynes recently now im running at 12psi on a stage 2 hybrid and totally wasted him, I was shocked how easy it was. Point to point through the twisties a scooby or evo vs a tubby with evenly matched power would only ever go one way im afraid. That being said, fitting coilovers to my tubby was probably the best mod i've done, my mate was following me in his elise and he was very impressed by how my car held the road.

www.car13.net

Ant - Cantfindausername's website......

If you go to Car13 in the left hand menu, then videos, then supra......

Watch Ant's stock rev 2 turbo beat a 425bhp Supra!!

Off the line with a good launch the MR2 can beat most other jap cars :thumleft:

On track the Scoobys and Evos have the better of an mr2 turbo.

A straight drag is a different matter. I'm running 300 bhp and find the corners are where I loose out to the aformentioned.

However that was on average EBC red stuff. Carbo tech pads being fitted tomorrow along with new discs so the next track day should give improved performance.

A sorted mr2 turbo (by that I mean suspension and brakes) makes for a much more rewarding drive. 4wd pretzas and evos have little appeal in that any fool can drive one hard point to point.

When you get to grips with the tubby on track it is huge fun \:D/

The mr2 is a great little car but its not unbeatable, when i had mine i had times where i had trouble passing a clio and a civic, yet other times i could keep with cosworths and skylines.

Other people mod there cars too, sure the mr2 is fun to drive....RWD always is... Yes there quick cars too.

But you have to hand it to the evos and scoobs, For a family saloon there dam good cars for the money.

I honestly think the MR2 is one of the best looking sportscars you can get. Nothing else can match it's exotic curvy lines.

I think a standard rev 3 turbo v standard Impreza WRX would be pretty damn close although I've heard the MR2 should just have the edge except for the twisties. Not sure about Evo's.

All this talk about racing.
Would be good to see more 'action' with more people entering the Toyota Sprint Series or other MR2 race series. Racing on the roads, mugs game imo. ](*,) [-X
Do it on track where you can get to grips with the handling and win, or lose, in realtive safety.

Hi Guys, thanks to BenF for the welcome on to the site, i would like a little advice & help if possible, i have purchased a 1994 MR2 rev 3 GTS with a true 35000 miles on the clock it has been sitting for 3 years with a broken engine tucked away in an outbuilding, i have some pics with the car of new pistons being fitted and the engine being worked on, any way i dont know which option to choose rebuild the existing with some heavey mods or go to woodsport and have the 3lt V6 fitted (he seemed very genuine and helpfull) advice on other reputable tuning companies would be welcome, how good is this model i have ? I have a good vehicle back ground but i have been out of the car game for a few years ( i was a test driver for 21 years at landrover) but i now have my own company and want to spend some time with my eldest lad and give him the car when complete,(only when iv had a little go) great site and really getting into this.

Hello chaps

I think that from a standstill the advantage is very much in the 4WD cars favour. I think beating an evo or impreza from a standing start is unlikely if both cars have similar power. But once rolling the MR2 should be able to pull away.

The 4WD transmission system has greater transmission losses than a 2WD system. If I remember the text book something like 25% of power is wasted in the cogs which in a 2WD is under 10%.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong! lol

The only time a 4WD will get better grip over a good Mid engine RWD is in the wet / dust etc.. on a good surface road like a drag strip, the RWD mid engine will launch just as good as a 4WD.

If i was wrong, then it would mean that the 60ft times of a 4WD car will be better than a mr2 all day long as the mr2 would never get the traction... and with more power, the slower the potential 60ft .. And we know this is wrong as i have seen a fair share of mr2's popping wheelies off the start!! wheelspin would prevent this.. Also, cars like nathan's ,Xxxx's, jeffs etc are hitting 62mph in around 2 seconds flat!! i dont think a 4wd setup would allow for that kind of time unless the entire transmission was upgraded!

Just seen this and couldn't help myself...

Like spittin flames I have had all three MR2, Evo and now a scooby... Although I never had my MR2 standard so cant compare out of the box but the evo and scoobies now are well moddified out of the box anyway. (Evo had HKS Exhaust, intercooler standard.)

Its all down to the type of racing you want... The MR2 is good for drag racing with its easily modified solid engine. From the mentality of the original poster it seems he is after road racing, on twisty roads the MR2 is always going to struggle (bumpy roads and the likes) the AWD really benifits. The MR2 requires more driver skill to drive at the limits, where as the evo was very easy to 'drift'. Asking the question on an MR2 forum though... come on...

Really though any car standard can be a blank canvas! ](*,)

Maybe interesting...
Out of the box...

The thing going for the mr2 is its strong engine and ability to be cheaply moddified.

I think the 90% of the time you wil pull up somewhere be it lights or a toll booth or something and you see some (no offence but seems to be most scooby /evo owners) a Tw@ in a baseball cap with an exhaust so large you have to check for hiding illegal immigrants if coming back from the continent. but im getting off topic and most confrontations seem to end up being straight line type events so up the boost on your rev3 and you will get all but the most tuned evo/scoobys
