[Mk2] [Turbo] Power steering rack, difficult job?

Post by Greddy-Matt »

Hi guys,
I'm refurbing all my suspension components, ordering them all through Camskill, question is as part of that I'm planning to replace items in the steering rack, the rack end (drumstick) and a few other bits.

How hard is it to swap the racks out and work on them? I'm running power steering and have bought fresh fluid incase I need it.

Cheers

hi mate,
ive done it and TBH its pretty easy.
i remember that theres 4 bolts holding the rack on and one bolt to undo to release it from the steering.
then its just the hoses that connect with the steering fluid.
its quite simple when you see it.

Ah ok thats good news, I've had a very quick look and it looked ok to do, but then the fiddly jobs always do! I've got a good 5 degrees of movement either way on the steering wheel before I get any response from the wheels so definately got some play in there somewhere!

looking forward to driving it after months(8+) of it being off the road..its going to be like having a new car!.

Sounds like you're doing the same bits as me, I can't wait to get poly bushes in her, and get a proper geometry set up done @ somewhere like WIM.

I've not had the geo checked since fitting the Teins, she goes round corners prety good now (although better in right handers than left lol) so hopefully it'll be even better after!

Are you replacing the front track rod ends etc?

Difficult: no.

Messy: extremely.

If you have a compressor, I'd recommend getting a fluid drainer kit.
