For those with KYB's/replaced shocks

Post by Pete »

Hi All,

I'm just about to refurbish a spare set of struts and fit some KYB inserts. I was going to paint the struts up with Por before I fit the KYB's too.

Do I fit the new inserts with the existing nut that held the original inserts in? There aren't any nuts with the new inserts, but one of the original nuts is in poor shape. Should these have come with the KYB's, or do I need to go to Toyota for a new one?

Is there anything else I should do while i'm at it?

Cheers
Pete

My KYB's came with the big nut that holds the shock in the strut and comes with the strut top nut too.

Sounds like you'll have to go to toyota.

I might have my old ones if you want them just pay for postage.

If you post a picture of the exact ones you want I 'll dig them out.

It's one of these which is a bit knackered, nut that holds the shock in.

Does it matter if I use the Toyota nut with the KYB's? I'm just wondering if the KYB ones are different :-k

Thanks

Will toyota supply just the nut as the standard shocks are a complete unit?!?

the nuts on kyb's are different as the top of the shock is a different shape therefore you cant use the orginal nuts. the kyb's should come with them so get onto who ever supplied you.

Odd they never came with your shocks. My Koni's had these in the box.

the ones we took off were knackerd too (had to use heat in the end to get them off)

Toyota dont sell the nuts seperately. and the new strut replacements that they sell are sealed units!!! not inserts

youll be lucky if you can find another top nut

I bought them from a chap on ebay - brand new and unused. It seems he hasn't included the required top nut then.

I'll ask him what has happened, I was sure they should come with KYB's own top nut. Is there any alternative if he doesn't have them?

Hmm, worth a shot, but I think those people will be few and far between :(

Will a motor factors stock these on their own? I think the same insert is used in a certain model lexus & camry.

Did someone say the original nuts don't go with the KYB struts.

I think on the KYB's the top nut is the same as the TOyota one.

I have 4 spare KYB nuts and 4 spare Toyota nuts downstairs somewhere i'll grab some photos later. The Koni ones are different, and you can't fit the toyota ones or the KYB ones onto the Koni's as the top of the strut is a different shape.

Ditto...you can't use the toyota insert 'nuts' on the GR-2 inserts and new ones should be in the boxes along with a new nut for the top mount.

Ooh, good to know. I guess the market value of my top nuts just increased then

I've had dealings directly with KYB in the past and they told me at the time that the nuts for thier kits could be ordered seperatly.
Find a local motorfactors that deal in KYB's and they should be able to sort it out for you.

Unfortunatly I've lost the part numbers and prices but they should be able to find out
