[Mk2] [Turbo] CT20b made a bad noise, upgrade to GT2835

Post by kevinTurboFR »

hi guys,

my ct20b make a very bad sound and deliver only 0.1b (compressor wheel still gripped).
i stopped my mr2, and controlled piping, intercooler, etc.
i have in stock, a gt2835 hks turbo coming from my previous supra, so, i think ill change my ct20b for this one, but, do i need to change my ECU? i already have a mine's one, and don't want more power than my ct20b could give (1.2b).

if anyone could answer this little question, it could be very cool.

Hello kevin

A difficult question to answer insofar as we do not know the modifications you have made.
A rev 1/2 with a AFM would register an increase in volume of air so would probably react better to a change of turbo.
A run on a dyno using a wideband sensor would answer most of your queries.

If you are going to run to the expense of a Garrett you really should run on a dyno.

you re right Stephen, i missed some indications!

My mod' on my gen3 are :
Apexi air intake
Mine's Ecu
full piping, Xs Power intercooler (waiting for an st205 CC in command)
bailey BOV (will be change for A greddy RS)
Berk tech decat, OEM manifold and OEM exhaust.

I'm also looking for a PLX R500, so ill take a look to the AFR

i ll not buy the garret because i already have it, thats why i m think to upgrade my tubby with this one, but, if it's required too much modification (forged pistons,...) i prefer to keep a ct20b.

Wont need the forgies... just need to address the a/f as they'll be more mass delivered on that unit ( assumption )

Having said that.... my 200sx ran a T28 which is a similar turbo.. and their injectors are 370/380's .. they're good for 1 bar all day long... again.. similar to toyokids intake though, they've a live wire to measure the flow being drawn into the turbo.....

Generally.. I'd stick it on... run a wideband and egt.. and do some monitoring... it wont exceed the existing fuelling... but may command more fuel enrichment mid range .. top end should be fine.

Wideband may say enough fuellings going in.. but if the egt's start to rise... then more fuel will need to be added ! :thumleft:

thanks JJ! and toyokid, so, i ll made this upgrade. and if necessary, a friend will tune the car.

do you think i need to change my manifold or i can keep the OEM one, with a flange adaptor (fensport sold a ct20/26 to T25/28 flange) ?
i heard from a friend, that toyota manifold could split after a previous removing (seen on his own Celica CS st185), this problem exist on our gen3 ?

i think i ll have to change my decat too.. but someone could do one for me, so, this not a problem.

if anyone know a good quality manifold for 3sgte, let me know (i have a bad feeling with ebay-manifold). [-X

Retain the stock 3sgte manifold... tough as old boots .. if its been leaking, at most get the contact face skimmed.. but no problems.. leave it alone. I would go for an adapter plate... but see if you can get a milled one opposed to some 5hitty cast one that hasn't had 2 mins spent on it cleaning all the bad surface / edges up ( attracts heat.. and flow disruptions - getting anal now ! )

Think I saw something on ATP turbos or it may have been ATS or MR controls ! #-o

Smokin....

Post by toyokid »

Hi Kevin

I think you will find rev 1 and rev 2 have 7 or 9 bolt exhaust manifolds,
probably just rev 2 with 9 bolt?

Whereas rev 3 have an 8 bolt manifold.

yes, i found many rev1/2 manifold with t25/28 flange and t3, but no manifold for rev3 with t25 flange (1 or 2 with t3 flange), but, i bought an adaptor t25/ct on fensport, so the problem is solved now.

as soon as the adaptor and my st205 CC are at home , i ll start to change my turbo.
i ll try to made some pics if someone wants.

Arent the HKS numbers different to garret numbers? I thought that turbo was bigger than a T28, could be wrong though.

HKS respect flange type, and they have there own name but i think it could be approximatively same as a T28.. a GT2835 next to a ct26 from a supra TT....

this is not the turbo i ll put in my gen3, too much damage on this one, but it ll be one of them.

i don't want 3 turbos, i just have them. two come from the HKS big twin turbo kit from a supra TT, one was for spare. When the cars was upgrade with 2 IHI turbo, the owner sold me some parts for my previous supra. But, i sold my supra and keep the parts before upgrade... so

I ll only put one (fthe one for spare and new) in my MR2, i dont wan't a 3S-GTTTE

T28s arent very big, similar in size to a Ct26/Ct20.
