What gauges

Post by afennell »

I’m looking at replacing my current boost gauge as it rattles and drives me crazy.

I'm thinking of getting a duel a pillar pod and was wondering what would be the best gauge for the second hole.

I was thinking of oil temp or fuel air as I do the odd track day.
The car currently has the usual bolt on mods and a uni chip, but looking at a power fc this year and i believe the hand controller can display some things.

Possible larger turbo in the future.

Also any suggestions to where to buy. Looking at 52mm gauges. Would love some Defi’s again but don't really what to pay that much, and I don’t think they do 52mm

I'm not a fan of twin pillar pods, found it restricted view too much at some times.

Anyhoo... I think general consensus is oil temp.

xyberautos do some nice "stealth" gauges. Stepper motors too. Have heard good feedback about them so just bought myself oil temp/pressure and boost :thumleft:

They even have the same "Daisy Chain" compatability as teh Defi gauges. But don't use a controller. For the price, you can't really go wrong.

I'm not a fan either, the previous owner fitted a boost gauge in the standard location, this caused a short in the rev signal wire causing a misfire ( he had cut though the plastic on the back of the clocks then solded wires to fix the broken buses) so had to buy a set of new clocks. I them moved the boost gauge to the cigarette lighter but it now has started to cause a rattle and I hate rattles, plus its not the best for visibility.
I did have the single din defi unit with three gauges at one point , but this does not have a boost gauge in it.
Thanks for the link, maybe I will just get a single pod

How I used to have it when I first put the car back on the road...

Then I decided that 3000 miles round europe would require some stereo, so mounted them on the dash...

How do you find the single pod?

Gauges look good, look just like the defi gauges. I like been able to set a warning limit but that normally comes with a price. Very nice thanks.

Have you done anymore trips around europe?
I talked to you a bit at the rolling road day at tdi near lakeside.

yeah I remember you from there. Its funny to think I was actually hoping to have my car by then  And that was last Feb!

I love the single pod. The one thats in the car at the mo (in thoughs pics) is one I made myself from the twin pod that I had before. I've got an MrEddy single pod sat at home that I might pass on and redo my own. Undecided at the mo though. I prefer having the gauges set out this way. I keep thinking about other gauges, but don't think I really need them, and then the clutter starts in the cabin.

No more trips have been done in my car since 2007. Had to do last years one in my mates 350z... (oh the hardship )

Got one planned for this June though that I'm setting up with a mate. 2Thumbs-Up Road Trip - shameless plug.

how about some nice stack gauges
http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ ... =STAST3301

I'm pretty sure they do a 52mm boost gauge as well, at some point i'm going to get the 52mm oil pressure and temp ones. They do electrical and mechanical ones.

Just about to buy one but the gauges look like there electrical and not mechanical.

Have you had yours through, if so I take it you don't connect the boost gauge upto a vacuume hose.

You've got a sensor which still takes a "mechanical" reading. Much like the stock gauge does. Pressure feed into a sensor which converts the "mechanical" pressure into an electronic reading. Rather than running a vac line the length of the car you just run a small piece to the sensor and wire that into the gauge. :thumleft:

Purchased one of the suggested gauges. Great value for money. Lovely gauges. Thanks :thumleft:

No worries. I can't wait to get mine hooked up with the RED leds I've got for the gauge cluster as well :D

Does anyone have a preference over mechanical or electrical gauges? Is it just a case of running a hose or a cable, or is one of them more responsive?

Electric you have to reply on the calibration of a sender. Mechanical you have to have hot oil running into the cabin. I know my preference everytime.
