[Mk1] [NA] Connecting an amplified subwoofer

Post by KD88 »

My daughter has an Alpine CDA-9847R head unit installed in her mk1 MR2 which only has very small speakers front and rear, so in an effort to improve the overall sound I got her a Pioneer TS-WX11A amplified subwoofer for Christmas.
Neither of us are any where near electronic experts but we can usually manage basic car related jobs. The wiring instructions supplied with the sub look very complicated which would mean taking it to a dealer and the quotes for fitting are about 75% of what I paid for it, but the diagram for the head unit shows that the sub simply connects directly into the rear but I presume the sub will need its own power supply and earth.
Which instructions should I go for.
Regards and thanks in advance.
Nigel.
PS, please be gentle with me and talk in VERY simple terms.

Right, I am presuming you have a sub+built in amp?

Small box with a speaker and a little connector box somwhere.

First things first, you need to find out if the sub box has its own special ISO connector? and do you have it?
Or is it like a proper amp where you need RCA leads and earth wire and power wire?!

You can normaly tell by looking at the connections.

Its similar to the ones you use on the back of your head unit which means you have an ISO connecter and is generally plug n play with a little bit of wiring.

If its more like screws and stereo jacks then you have the easy one(Maybe) which I find easier to explain as mostly same on every amp/sub.

Let us know which one you have as I google is too slow to search.

thanks for the reply, but I have now got the information I need and will have a go at fitting when we both have the time.
