Headlight upgrade

Post by Pug_crew »

Just seen these on eBay.

Has anyone tried these and are they any good? My lights are pretty poor so I would like to do something so I can see better in the dark.

Hmm, I have heard Raybrigs been mentioned a fair bit. Personally I went to Halfords and got the mega bulbs (90% brighter) i.e. the ones that are bright as you can go on the road..... job done :thumleft:

If you have standard bulbs then it can be fun. Even now people claim not to have seen the car

Where is the kicker pattern in the lens?? the lens looks symmetrical to me?

Headlights need to have this \____ pattern in the lens for dip beam kick pattern. This is what makes LHD and RHD lights handed, these do not look handed at all, just a word of caution.

We have always just replaced the bulbs with new ones and jobs a good un :thumleft:

We noticed with original bulbs that there was "yellowing" or (when close up to shiney paint (like the back of a car)) black spots in the middle of the beam where usually one would see a "hotspot".

New bulbs eliminated this.

I have also tried a slightly brighter bulbs (Halfords brand (brown box)) with good results. I wouldn't go for the blue tint "ultra brights" (blue box) though - they're :-:

Yes, I've already upgraded my bulbs but still think they could be improved upon.

Perhaps I'm comparing to modern cars and being a bit unrealistic but I'm sure there must be a better way out there somewhere.

I did see some attempts on here of using Puma lights but not only are they very expensive even from a breakers I'm not sure how sucessful they have been.

wiring the beams up direct from the battery using relays is a good way of improving your lights
its amazing how much current is lost through switches etc.

How do you do this? Has anyone tried this and how sucessful is it?

Also, are there any drawbacks?

Worth noting that just changing the bulbs won't always help that much, as after ~20 years, the reflectors are generally dirty and don't reflect that well any more.

I bought some Raybrigs once (for a Mk2, but it's the same thing), and they were slightly better, but they're really flimsy with a thin plastic lens... I'm not sure they'd stand up to any flying pebbles/stones (unlike the stock ones which seem to be almost bullet proof).

does your brain now ache?
I remember BR motorsport in Leamington Spa doing a relay kit for VW Golfs way back in time
also someone on the MR2 OC site did a "how 2" for a 4 headlamp set up on MK2s
