[Mk2] [Turbo] Fitting oil temp/oil pressure/boost guage tomorow HELP! how to`s with pics?

Post by mistertwo_2008_uk »

Right, i have absolutly no clue where the oile pressure sender and the oil tem sender fit? and pics? (i have done a search but could not find any pics!)

Also the boost guage + mbc will hopefully be going on so some help and pics for that too would be great!.

Its on my REV1 91 Car

Thanks for any help/info.

Daz

(i`ve got the adapter to allow 2 sender to be screwed into the block.... but where that goes i dont know!)

I also have a custome 3 guage pillar mount (but it doest fit very well!) not sure if other have had probs with there custom made mounts, but mine has no clips or way to attatch it to the car like the OEM panel it replaces.

post a pic of your oil 3-way adapter piece.

if it looks like this

Image

then the best place to fit the oil pressure sender is on the head , Dizzy end.. its just next to the coolant neck , you will see a sensor screwed in the head with some thread showing and 2 pin wire connected to it (oil pressure switch).

You undo that sensor and the adapter should fit in place of it. i found with mine that there was not enough space tho to refit the origional oil pressure switch back on the end of that adapter, so i used a BSPT allen key plug to block it off. the sender screws in the side hole.

make sure you have the correct thread on the adapter. you need a 1/8" BSPT male (fits to the head) and the 2 female holes should be 1/8" NPT (side for sender) and 1/8" BSPT on the end.

the sender should have 1 terminal for a wire to the back of the gauge. the gauge will have 3 wire terminals (usually) +12v, earth, Sensor wire.

If you want to refit the oem oil pressure switch sensor, you will have to get a piece of braided oil line with a 1/8" BSPT male one end and 1/8" BSPT female the other, so you can remote mount the adapter.

hope that helps!

4th photo down is what looks to be the pressure sender and the last photo is the adaptor for it.

I'm not being funny, but if you need to ask, are you happy/confident to do it yourself?

You do look to have all of the required bits, but if you're not confident then they're as much use to you as a chocolate teapot I'm afraid.

2nd photo down is the oil pressure sensor, 4th down boost pressure sensor,7th down oil temp. sender with block adapter, last pic. another adpter.
The problem is fitting the oil pressure and temp sender as you only have sinle take off adater's . Have you thought about using a sandwhich plate instead?

I Heard sandwich plate adaptors are a bad idea due to leakage?

silly me thinking i had all that was needed!.

i`ll be taking a look at the installed items soon so maybe i`ll have more of a clue then

i would love to have somebody else fit and wire in the guages... but i sis want to try and do things as much myself as i could.

then there is the expense of getting a garage to do it... at the mo thats just not a option.

if there is somebody local that has fitted there own and wants to do mine for a reasonable price then i would be interested in listening to offers!

Thanks

I'd have to go with Slarty - it's frustrating to have shiny new parts kicking round not being fitted, but with what you're proposing to fit, there's potential to kill the engine if you aren't 100% with what you're doing.

Best advice - a bit less haste and either spend some time searching on here and getting your head round exactly what you need to do, or save up and take it somewhere like James and his team at 3S in Hampshire - not far from you. Have a look in the Affiliate section for further details.

Failing that, there may well be some willing volunteers in the Swindon area who know what they're doing.

Be warned, though - although MR2 turbos are generally reliable and solid cars if they're looked after, things can get very expensive very quickly if you get it wrong.

If money is tight (who isn't having that problem at the moment!) and you really want to learn how to do things yourself, if you haven't already, start small with the important stuff like servicing and general maintenance. You'll get a much better idea of how the car is put together and will start to appreciate if there are any problems with the general running before fitting the bells and whistles.

Sounds a lot when i type it in!

if you dont want to use a plate then you can use the adapter supplied for the oil pressure taking the feed from the head and then ether have a boss welded/brazed into your sump for the oil temp sender or have your sump plug drilled and tapped for the sensor. You could also go for a remote oil filter set up which if they are like mine are tapped for both oil pressure and temp sensors.

Will the above ebay item screw straight in? i.e replace the sump drain bolt?

if so then i think this is the way to go!

Thanks
