Frozen door locks

Post by booch »

Need some top tips!
Every morning my door key holes are frozen up. At the moment i'm having to pour hot water down them.
I'm getting an alarm fitted in new year, so then i'll have a remote. Till then has anyone got any tips on how to stop them freezing up?
Thanks in advance

go to tesco and get some plasters... Go for the water proof one and over the top put the cloth one (plaster)

Should stop water and keep it a bit warmer in the lock>

Had to do this to padlocks on site...worked ok for a while :thumleft:

I think your caught in a viscious cycle by pouring hot water on your locks which will then freeze nthe next night. As mentioned once defrosted get something like wd40 in them which should stop them freezing again (or better still get remote locking).

And oil the key next time you open the door, gets the lubricant into places you sometimes can't reach - wipe the key afterwards though, you don't want to go to work with an oily pocket :)

Worked for me, stuck the straw in the lock and gave it a good blast, its not frozen since. Now I just have teh glass to window rubber sticking issue, but thats easily fixed by pouring some water round it. I'd be interested in any method of preventing it happening in the first place though?

Folks youve gotter go easy on the water! LOL

Defrost using de-icer, lubriacte your locks and keys with oil and get some silcone sparya from halfords to lubriacte the actual door rubbers and window seals to stop them sticking. Its the water/damp that freezes causing stuff to stick together so the more you can remove it out of the equation the better :-)
