[Mk2] [NA] Help with brake disc choice please!

Post by darrenmr2 »

Hey guys..

Need some new front discs ideally drilled and grooved, or just drilled (as i prefer the look of them over just grooved discs!)

Question is where is the best (most resonable!) place to get them? And what size am i currently running on my 1995 JDM 10th anniversary N/A model? I have started looking for them (ebay and stuff) but am not sure what size discs i need to purchase! (and obviously i dont want to get the wrong size)

I have just replaced the rear discs (standard ones) so dont need the front and rear disc packages that are on offer on ebay (although they are very reasonably priced!)

Any help/thoughts would be much appreciated! :thumleft:

Thanks people..

Darren :D

ps-am running factory discs/calipers all round and standard 15's...just incase you needed to know!

Hi

Standard discs are all you need. Drilled ones are noisier and can crack with heat. Small cracks start to appear around the holes. No increase in braking performance.
Groved can be quite noisey and will wear your discs faster.
Standard discs from Rogue are all you will need. There are people running over 450bhp on these with no problems. Treat yourself to some yellowstuff or Carbotech pads instead of spending extra on discs.
Apexi Induction, Gutted Cat, Departure Exhaust, Magnecor Leads, St205 cc, Blitz ebc.
Carbotech pads.

Thanks Extubby!

Wow, didnt expect that response though for standard discs! I get really bad brake fade from mine under very hard long braking...and a horrible noise coming from the discs...or does that mean that they are possibly warped?? When i brake hard, then try and brake again, the brakes just dont seem to work! Had the same prob with my rev 2 tubby as well! :-k

Warped or??

Thanks guys, any other thoughts??

Brake fade is caused by the pads mainly. Decent pads like Yellow Stuff won't fade with even serious abuse.

Seriously standard discs + decent pads is all you need. The other way to improve braking is to use grippier tyres - that way you can apply more braking force without locking the wheels up.

Be aware also that if you use uprated front pads you should also use the same for the rears so that you keep the brake bias correct.

Another good brake upgrade is to fit braided lines. This improves the braking response and ensures that no braking effort is lost in the stock lines expanding under pressure. A brake master cylinder brace also has a similar effect in improving the braking feel and response.

You'll want the same pads all round definitely :thumleft:

Well worth getting a fluid change if it hasn't been done for a while. Get the system bled at least if that's not been done recently.

Not sure the best place to get Yellow stuff. They're very popular, should be easy to get :D

LOADS of 'Turbo' pads...will they fit my 1995 Rev 3 though??
If so i have found a few on ebay, just need to know 100% they fit before i buy! And i would rather you guys (who know what they are talking about!) tell me rather than a dodgy ebay seller lol!

i have just put uprated discs on my car, the braking is more responsive and a lot stronger but unless you have abs don't waste your money...

my discs are permanently noisy especially driving through built up areas and if i have to do an emergency stop they just lock, very dangerous and i totally regret putting them on my car...

will be going back to standard discs as soon as i can be ar$ed

noise depends on how much grooves. I had those tar ox 40 grooves i think on a fiesta which were noisey but i've got these..

clicky!

on my crx and they are deffo better over stock. Sure, abs kicks in but these have saved my life a few times  and they're not noisey either!

standard discs, uprated pads, uprated fluid and uprated hoses are the way to go, although remember to match your pads to your use, uprated pads are good but the stronger you get them the hotter they have to be to work, which in turn will mean less cold response, i've heard of yellow stuffs having to be 'warmed up' before use, had red stuffs on my old car and with them you had to brake late and hard to get them working best, currently running green stuffs with standard discs on my car and i've had no trouble with them, on road or track, even managed to lock the front wheels at an indicated 120mph

ah, you bought discs already. Was gonna say ignore me as they do lock up easily and that wouldn't be good on a 2.

Yeah I got my front standard discs from camskill, £67 inc. postage. They will be fine. I have mintex standard pads which seem pretty good although probably not quite as sharp as the uprated track pads which I had before.

As above - for your car, NA pads are exactly same size as Turbo pads.

I just got Yellowstuff pads all round for my MR2 track car (95 NA, so same as yours).

You will need DP4995 front and DP41107 rear: See Here for example, or just google "EBC" and pick a supplier from the list.
