New Member Intro - Early Mk1a MR2

Post by tommundy »

Hi all,

My name is Tom and I'm from Beverley, East Yorkshire and I thought I'd introduce myself to you all, seeing as I've just picked up a new toy!

I spoke to Carl Windsor earlier this afternoon after getting his number off of the old mk1 website and he said to introduce myself, so here we are :)

Just over 3 weeks ago I picked myself up a Mk1 MR2 and after reading a few threads on here it seems to be a very early one? (VIN ending 12117) I actually have a letter of correspondence in the service history from Toyota stating that it was the 276th one into the country!

Heres a quick couple of pics:

I had been looking at MR2's for about 6 months but not with the intention to buy. However, when I saw this one in the condition it is I had to have it! So, I won the auction on eBay and travelled over to Warrington to pick it up. The guy I bought it off had had it since November '07 and intended to use it as a track car but as soon as he picked it up he realised it was too good to do that too. He'd then sourced the mud flaps, some 'bumper guard trim' and also the front lower spoiler. He also had a new engine and gearbox fitted in August of this year due to a split piston on the old unit. He was selling due to no space on the drive for his Megane R26.

The service history is immense and it has had main dealer history for over 20 years of its life, with the last year or so done at a specialist garage.

Since I got it I've done a few small things like fit new wipers, get some tailored mats to protect the carpet and give it a good polish. The interior is basically as I picked it up and is just like it came out of the showroom! I fitted some new NGK spark plugs today and that seems to have only improved an already good engine. Oh, and I fitted a new fuel vapour release valve because the old one was knackered. (cheers to the forums for a solution to the fuel smell!)

Anyway, I could go on for ages as I'm so pleased with it. Let me know what you think and if you want to go for a run either around East Yorkshire or Sheffield (Peak District :)) where I'm at uni then let me know!

I've already racked up 1200 miles in the 3 weeks of having her and theres no rattles or signs of any faults so I think I've bagged myself a beauty.

I really want to start attending a few meetings so I'll keep an eye out for whats going on.

Here are loads more pics of her:

Let me know what you all think!

Cheers
Tom!

Very nice car mate, I'm just down the road from you in Driffield, if you want to have a mk1 meet it will have to be in my drive as I'm still on with rebuilding me engine. :?

Hope to see you around in Bev as my wife works there and I'm always giving her lifts, don't see many mk1's in our area especially 1a's.

Looks like he'll be needing the rear corner triangles...
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Everything he told me when I picked up the car rung true with his posts on here.

Hi mate, yeah. I pop through Driffield quite a lot going from Beverley to Wet Wang and back on the Malton road :) I'll PM you about popping down for a cuppa or something in the next few weeks if thats cool?

Hi Ollie,
Cheers, and yes, will be joining up in the next few weeks. Just getting settled after only just getting moved into a house for Uni!

I saw your new member intro over on Pistonheads, I go by the name of quattroTom.

I could get hold of them but (dont shoot me here) I think it looks cleaner without them on, hehe.

Cheers again all.

Hope to see you at an event soon!

That car looks mint, I'm really getting into the Mk1 'a' cars after buying mine a few weeks ago

Image

We are looking for a show car/cars for the 2009 Classic Motorshow at the NEC, it's early days but your example would be perfect for the stand, keep it standard mate!, looking for 3 more as we already have a 1987 MK1 'a'

If you are interested I'm also looking for show cars for the American Extravaganza Fins 'n' Chrome show next May at Preston Park in Stockton, not that far away from you.

Yea, as said before make sure you join our fantastic club, we are currently updating our website and will be live by the end of the year.

Congrats on your purchase, it looks absolutely stunning, look after it.

Hi,

Your purchase doesn't look too shabby either! :thumleft:

Its definitely staying standard. The only thing on the cards being done is a slight alloy refurb and thats only due to a tiny bit of laquer peel. I'd be honoured to show it at NEC next year, and the other show is a definite possibility too :)

If you need an extra set of hands on the website drop me a line.

I will look after it, but I bought it to drive and as I'm in the middle of selling my 211k mile Audi, I'm not affraid of big miles :D

Cheers
Tom

Tom,

PM sent, you not that far away from me 92 miles :thumleft:

If you come to the LM party I can meet you @ Woodall services on the M1, will you be bringing a partner or coming alone.

Glad you keeping it standard, I'm looking to get my wheels refurbed also, just need to find a good place to do it.

Did you get good insurance, I got mine for £105 fully comp with Autonet.
