MR2 automatic - what gearbox?

Post by Peter C »

Gents,

As MR2s are mass produced cars, they share certain components with other models.

Does anyone know what other Toyotas make use of the Rev3 automatic gearbox? In the MR2 installation, the gearbox has to handle 175BHP. Is this a lot for this gearbox?

Also, if the Rev1/2 158BHP engine is known as the 3S-GE, what's the Rev3/4/5 175BHP engine known as?

Cheers.

No idea on the gearbox side but the engine is still a 3SGE.
I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

Not sure about the gearbox Peter but the 175BHP engine is just another variant of the 3S-GE. It's a bit like the 4A-GE has 5 variants: 2 large port with different cranks, small port, 20V silver top and 20V black top.

I imagine something like a 2.2Camry Auto will have a similar gearbox to the MR2 Auto :-k

Cheers fellas. The Camry suggestion makes sense.

Hi Chris. I sold that blue Coupe (with your old wheels) on EBay. The new owner is picking it up tonight. I've said it before, but the Rev3 is a keeper.

Considering there has never been a hot Camry (do we think the V6 Camry is hot?), 175BHP is probably the most power this gearbox has ever been up against (unless it was fitted to the V6 Camry - what power does that produce?).

Automatic Celicas, Carinas, Starlets, Corollas of similar vintage were all obviously less powerful.

Is probably similar to the autotragic SC.

My understanding is this - applies to MK2:

Crappy manual gearbox: S54 (no diff, low power)
Good manual gearbox: E153 (viscous LSD, higher power)
Auto gearbox: A241E
