It allows you to overide the restrictions on the auto box for maintenance purpoises eg. with the button down you can put the auto box in gear without the engine switched on etc

that button is called a "shift lock" you will find them in most JDM spec Toyota Auto's, the button is used to select gears while the engine is off!

Hey there Peter.
Question for you: What's the odd 'sausage' shaped thing sticking up to the right of the button you've highlighted...... where the gearstick should be?
Is it a Stannah shifter?

Mate, this is my 5th MR2 and my first auto (MR2). It's the best one so far. I love the cruise-ability that the auto box provides. I'm loving every minute of it.

On long diustances they use about 1/3 less petrol :-)

With the overdrive switched on, at 80MPH the engine is ticking over at 2,800 rev/min.

auto gear shift.
pl help i can not take gear out fm park by pressing the pedel and need to press "shift lock" [little red but on the left to to relese fm pk to drive] sometimes it works as normal as it can be. gear box and the rest is fine.
pl can someone advise me to solve this
