Front and Rear track...

Post by DJJAW11 »

Hi,All

Just a quick Question on the AW11...
IS our stock aw11 track on the front actually wider than the rear(to aid turn in/response), or the rear wider than the front, or equal?

it should be identical front to rear, at 1440mm (i guess that figure is tyre centre to tyre centre)

be careful measuring it manually. tape measures are notoriously inaccurate, plus youve got to consider camber, castor and toe which will all potentially affect the measurement, by as much as 10-15mm and more in some cases

Many thanks one, and all, i thought the rear was a little wider, if not the same, but wonted to be sure.

Im guessing my rear probable wider now, running 205 on the rear and 195 on the front, 10mm spacer on front, and 15mm spacer on rear, though wheels are about 35ish offset and both are only 61/2"x15, but once the te37s are on, they will be wider, and the rears a higher offset also.

I guess, if we have the front track wider than rear, it will aid/add turn in, but maybe make it a little two much?

typically cars with front track wider than rear track have a tendency to turn in better, but its so much more complex than that one variable. giving the MR2 a wider front track wont necessarily fit the stereotype, there are too many other factors at play to make that conclusion without testing it. i personally dont think youll feel a difference on a road car, there is too much compliance everywhere else to notice such subtle changes. changing the track by 10mm is unlikely to make much difference

you should currently be 5mm different front to rear, the tyre and wheel widths dont make a difference since the measurement is taken from the centre of the tyre (and increasing widths will do so in both directions). offset is the only thing that will change it, as this is measured relative to the vertical wheel centreline, and will position that centreline further in or out. at the moment your rear track should be 10mm wider than the front

however, as said, camber, castor and toe can all make a significant difference to the measured track width. personally i wouldnt get too caught up in it, there are better ways to improve turn in characteristics, the first place to start is with dampers!
