What sort of cost am I looking at to have a v6 camry engine fitted. Is it a straight swop as seen other mr2s with 1 in. Or what other non turbo engines do people recon I go for?

woodsport do the 3.0 v6 conversion, check them out, 2500 for a turnkey job i think

Yep 2500 and well worth it! So much more usable power than the standard 2ltr. Doesnt use that much more fuel either, similar to turbos.
