ian 1 speed camera van 0

Post by Ian Geary »

Here's a story to cheer people up

jsut over a fortnight ago I was driving on the A46 - a 3 lane motorway quality road in the Midlands.

I was late for a family do, so had crept above the NSL overtaking 2 lanes of sparse traffic in the outer lane. I was under 3 figures, but still doing enough to get my legs slapped.

As I came round a bend, I saw a bridge up ahead, with a white van perched on it.

Being the suspicious type, I checked my mirrors and put the brakes on asap, and cruised up to this thing at 70.

sure enough, it had a little camera sign on the side.

So I've spent the last 2 weeks wondering did I get on the brake quick enough before the van could get a fix?

turns out I did - they've now missed the 14 day period to send out a NIP .

So, lessons from this?

Don't speed and you won't get caught?

Nah - keep your driving sensible, stay alert, and check the local safety camera partnership website for camera sites before you set off!

I take it the car is registered in your name at your address, and that you don't normally have post go astray? :eye:

Assuming you were heading south, just after Coventry and just before Kenilworth, that van is notorious  - you hit it after a long, sweeping left hand curve that prevents you from seeing it til the last minute. The devious bar stewards.

Nice to know you got away with it, though - and that the Warwickshire Constabulary are as sharp as ever. ](*,)

Nice one mate - glad to hear the barsteward didn't get you.

I found a little Smart car with speed camera stickers on the side and a roof mounted camera hidden completely behind a fence with just the camera poking out on an arterial road into Manchester the other day.

The road is generally very quiet and has no shops or pedestrians about so people tend to drive along it briskly sometimes but it is hardly an accident blackspot.

What a sneaky place to put one! I though they were supposed to be in plain site?

Yup, i've seen them there many times :-: I guess the most depressing part is that people just don't learn :bang:

I recently got myself a new toy: A Ducati 916.

There's a twisty bit of road near me and the vans take great delight on parking on a blind corner along a straight bit of road where it's impossible that any other vehicle will be joining or leaving the road (no side roads or farms etc).

A few bikers have complained to the local rozzers that the van is actually a danger since drivers usually (I do it even if I'm not speeding) brake as soon as they see the van and this can cause them to run wide, into oncoming traffic, or even cause an accident in poor weather.

No idea if the complaints were officially acted on but the van hasn't been there for ages.

Personally, I'm not particularly upset about the vans IF they're used in places suc as dodgy junctions etc, where they DO work in a safety capacity - to slow people down, rather than being in places such as just over the brow of a hill on a long straight where they have NO safety impact at all and are obviously there to generate revenue.

Also, I'd still love to know why it's unsafe for a gypo' to sell pegs out of a trannie van in a lay-by and yet it's perfectly OK for a camera van to park up in a lay-by all day.
