2nd gear synchro rings..........easy ???

Post by Nogg »

Just about to take the box out to do the clutch and am considering replacing
the synchro rings on second as it crunches on quick changes. All other gears
are purrfect.
Is it an easy enough job or needing so many special tools as to live with
changing gear with a bit of mechanical sympathy ?

I htink I need a new box then, as mine has this problem. Only does it during a traffic light grand prix, it's ok if you're driving economically. but who the hell in their right mind wants to do that??????

i had a simular problem........took it to my tame mechanic and found that a previous owner had put engine oil in the transmission, seems his dad had a celica and thier transmissions use the same oil for both so he assumed as the cars are simular he would do the same in the mr2.

amasing how much better the changes are now and she even feels a little more sprightly, i suppose thats because theres less of the thick stuff to spin through now

Probably the other way round, gearbox oil tends to be thicker & stay thicker when it gets hot. An engine oil marked as 10/40 has a viscous of 40 when cold & a viscous of 10 when hot, whereas a gearbox oil normally only has only one viscous either 80 or 90 depending on specification. It also has different additives which is why it normally smells quite bad.

A second hand box is a fine idea if the seller can guarantee its condition. One with sound synchros that doesn't drop out of 5th is worth a reasonable sum but one with either of these faults is worth nothing IMO.

Because it is the most often changed up to and changed down to gear, thanks to average city speeds of 15-30 mph, not forgetting the frantic downshifts for wellying.

Russ, why haven't you asked for mine? You know it's good. Shall I put it in the garage for when you come up?

If not, does anyone else want to make me an offer?

Mine is doing the same I was gonna do an oil change first as that would be easyer than changing the box but if that dont work I have a very good box on my spares car which has only done 90k and I know its good cause ive driven it

Its just that im a lazy g1t and would rather try the easy option first.

There are a couple of reasons for 2nd gear syncro to wilt above other gears;

Firstly it's a physically large gear so the syncro has to work harder to spin it up to speed than the other gears (1st excepted).

Secondly people make the syncro work hard by changing down without matching the revs which they probably do more going 3rd to 2nd then other gears.

Toyota changed the 2nd gear syncro design to reduce this problem - more detail here; http://www.ae92gts.com/ae92gts_trans_rb_1.html

Back to the original question - replacing the syncros yourself is quite hard work - you need specialist pullers to get it apart and a press to put it back together again. Lastly you need a lot of patience to get the right parts from the Toyota dealer as many have been superseded meaning you need two new parts where you thought you only needed one!
