This is the second Toyota that has done this to me...

I went to move the MR2, and the belts were squealing. Warning lights on dash.

Switch off, get out, and there's smoke EVERYWHERE.

The sodding alternator has jammed. Are these particularly hard to get at to replace? Where's the best place to get one? And why is it that it's only happened to me with Toyotas?

My mk1 did exactly that, got a replacement alternator from a broken MR2.
As long as the bolts haven't seized solid on the adjuster then it should be fairly straightforward.

Hi Richard,

To replace you'll first need to remove a 12mm bolt on the adjuster from the top and pull off the belt, then get under the car, pull out the plug, undo the 10mm nut on the power cable and a 14mm (I think) on the bottom.

You'll also need to remove the downpipe to get the alternator out of the bay. That should be 2 12mm nuts on the mid support and 3 12 or 14mm bolts on the manifold/downpipe connection which you'll need a deep socket for and finally 2 bolts on the dowpipe/cat section.

Really simple job to do, as long as the bolts aren't all rusted solid.

sorry to hear about the troubles mate, I think your right, cars know when they are being sold especially toyota and decide to play up lol!!

My 2 was in perfect condition for sale after the rocker gaskett refit, looked mint, ran perfect, had driven it that morning for abou 25mins with no noises / rumblings or squeeks, 10 mins before a viewer came to see her, i thought it wise if i took it for a spin round my estate to make sure everything was tiptop, dropped off the lowish kerb outside my drive and the F**k*** bearing seized on the back wheel?? needless to say he didnt buy it cos it sounded like a bag of s*1t lol

Anyone else had any similar circumstances when selling??

The night before i sold my Mk1 the radiator sustained a massive leak, problem was the guy was already coming down from scotland (to surrey!!) to buy it so had already left!, patched it up with Radweld (i know i know ) and i did tell him what had happened, anyway, got a phone call 7 hours later he got back to Scotland fine! he knew someone who could get him a radiator so it was all good in the end! I did mention he should join IMOC but I dont know if he ever did, Stevie, if you're reading this, I hope you enjoyed the car as much as i did!

I was right onto that until the downpipe bit. Seriously? It looks like I could remove it from above. I'm really not into taking the exhaust apart.

£10 would just about cover the postage What I'm curious about is where people are flogging their old ones - the Delica owner's club said that they could get £35 for a core, and I've got one Delica core, one Starlet alternator (works, just bought secondhand to get my Supra home when it did this!) and one MR2 one-in-waiting! No idea where to take them, though.

You don't need to remove it but it would make the job easier, you can remove the alternator from above, but prepare to swear a lot and graze your knuckles a bit.

I'd love to know how you can get it out from the top , was digging one out of a scrapped Rev2 N/A last night and could I f*ck get it out from the top. So after half an hour of swearing I took out the loom, fuse box, water reservoir and it finally plopped out from the passenger side.
