[Mk2] [Turbo] Overheating problem

Post by pulsar_gtir »

im looking into gettin a mr2 the problem is the one im intrested in, is overheating after being driven hard?
it wont overheat if the car is staying in low revs, however when it does go up it seems to go down as soon as it is been driven sensibly again

the seller seems quite genuine and has bled the system out to erradicate the problem of "airlocks" and has had a compression test done, which it came out fine.

The oil is not milky so wudnt suggest the headgasket is going. is there anything else it might be

thanks in advance

I wouldn't rule out the head gasket. Mine looked OK on a compression test and there was no water in the oil, but a sniffer test showed that the gasket was letting combustion gas into the coolant.

Other possibilities could be radiator cap, thermostat or water pump.

Ye change your thermostat, then check water pump, check radiator and fans. Sounds like it could be the fan not turning on. I would also bleed the sytem myself too and replace with forlife just to make sure.

if it was the head gasket wouldn't it overheat at idle. Ive had 2 go on different cars and they wouldn't run for 10 mins before overheating. :?

Not necessarily, mine was fine idling or doing short journeys but would overheat on long journeys or when using a lot of boost.

I'm forgetting its a turbo doh! #-o Could well be the gasket then though i would still change the thermostat and everything else to be sure.
