[Mk2] [Turbo] Charging woes.....

Post by AdDaMan »

Right my car died on me the other week, alternator.
Got a new battery and alternator all fitted. now most of the time its not charging but occasionally it starts working (i can tell as i have a volt meterin the car) and when its not working the power steering goes and the speedo goes.
Could it be something loose somewhere along the line?
anybody had this before??
really annoying as i want to go santa pod on sunday and need this sorted :(

Is the belt tight? Was it a new alternator you fitted??
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

I've got the same problem on my rev2 tubby. I changed the alternator and the problem didn't go away. Have you got the battery light on the dash when you turn the ignition on? It should be there until the engine is started (Mine isn't until I wriggle the plug on the alternator).

I believe my problem to be the plug giving an intermittent connection and thus only charging some of the time. Im going to chop it off tonight, take it apart, clean it out and then re-solder the wires back to it.

I had this exact problem on my 94 Rev 3. Turns out the brushes were worn on the alternator so had a recon one fitted. New battery fitted as well and now, touch wood, not had a single problem since.

Fixed it finally yesterday. It turned out to be the wiring loom underneath the intake manifold. Some of the wires which had been joined using crimps by Toyota had crumbled to nothing leaving an intermittent connection.
It was a pain in the backside to sort out but at least the car is running again for the time being.

Mr2 Not charging

Post by Mr2Madlad »

Hi

Check the wires that go into the alternater multiplug are not broken in the insulation / sheth, had this on my REV 1 Mr2 turbo.

The vibrating / movment in the wires intermittanly connect causing it to charge and then disconnect so it does not charge while driving and so on.

Also make sure the contacts inside the multiplug are clean and tight fitting.

You should get when engine is running around 14.2 volts

Yes when the battery power gets low the power steering will give up as it has not enough volts / current to work the same as most of the other high power electrical equipment like ABS.

Hope this helps
