Oven cleaner on alloys...the biz !!!

Post by brin »

All,

Read in a classic car mag recently about cleaning baked on brake dust/dirt from alloys using oven cleaner !

The wheels on my MR2 are new and so do not need doing but the front wheels on my wife's F**d Pu*a have always had that gold tinge on them caused by infrequent cleaning before we had it. I tried all sorts of cleaners and they always worked but never 100%.

So....A delve into the kitchen cupboard produces a can of oven cleaner, sprayed it on worked in with a brush, left for about a minuite, rinsed off and then washed the wheels with normal wash/wax and gave them a quick polish tp protect them.........Wow !!!....all grime gone including the really annoying gold marks in the corner of the spokes.

Recommended !! :o :o :D :D

Mr Muscle "Kitchen" cleaner is I believe more or less the same stuff as wonder wheels but cheaper
had this info probably 10 years ago from practical classics but they did warn against using "oven cleaner" as it would damage painted surfaces
None of this stuff is recomended for use on split rim 2 or 3 piece wheels as its corrosive and gets in between the the alloy and corrodes it
Neil are we just "cheapskates" here in the Moorlands

to be totally honest I never look how much it is a litre

back on topic I have used Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner a few times usually when I have had a "new" second hand car and want to get the wheels up to standard, it does shift baked on brake dust better than anything else I've tried

You've got no worries, there was a program on channel 5 a couple of weeks ago about a couple of weird guys (from America, say no more) who actually shag their cars....now they are seriously damaged

I'll give the oven cleaner a go on my daily driver as those wheels are looking in need of a clean...new rims coming for me MK1. :thumleft:

I love Mr Muscle orange multisurface cleaner too - kinder on other areas of the car.

The wheel stuff i use is Autoglym Alloy wheel cleaner, followed by A.G. alloy wheel spray which repels brake dust building up

Is this stuff good for cleaning out the engine bay too, as thats one tidy up job I want to do before I do bodywork and spraying or should I stick with GUNK :?:

I use these 2 also, they work very well.

I also use the Autoglym engine cleaner, havnt tried it on my car yet but tried it on the brother in laws mondeo as it had a massive oil leak. You just spray it on then wash it off :thumleft:

Fairy power spray is the best.

Loving these recommendations...will never need to spend £5 a bottle again on automotive cleaners....I'll just get Ansley Harriot round in his rubber gloves with some Fairy Power Spray and he can clean me engine bay so good, we could eat Sunday Roast from it
