When I originally looked into making the wiper delay variable my plan was to try and utilise the slot and an old light dimmer to do it.

I found that it wasn't really feasible for a couple of reasons.

The wiper switch is quite long, by the time it is spaced back far enough to allow the dimmer section to be inserted it's hard up against the back of the instrument housing, also the resistance of the dimmer is to low to allow a reasonable delay variation.

Trying to source a suitable potentiometer to fit on the shaft proved to be next to impossible, I'm not saying that it can't be done, everything is possible given enough time, effort and money

it just wasn't practical IMHO.

So I decided to go the separate potentiometer route as it was much more easier to do, it's fairly unobtrusive and can be positioned virtually anywhere you want.
