[Mk2] [Turbo] Recommend me some break pads!

Post by James Junior »

One thing I noticed when I bought this car was how low and soft the biting point is on the brakes. My previous rev3 turbo was a stark contrast - LOADS of stopping power high up the pedal. All the pads on this car were changed recently but the previous owner used cheap aftermarket pads.

Went for a good spin last night over Woodhead and I really don't have much confidence in their stopping power so it inhibits my driving on the open road.

Can anyone recommend a set of front and rear pads that won't break the bank but that will keep me out of a ditch?

Either standard Toyota or Carbotech from Rogue :thumleft: Mine had something else on them when I got it (pads were blue) and they were naff. Standard Toyota pads are green.

Was going to suggest Carbotech Panther+ myself, until I read the bit about not breaking the bank  £190ish for pads is an awful lotta money, but they are stunning pads :thumleft:

Standard Toyota pads are blue (well, the outer edge of them are, and green for the rears).

Yellow stuff EBC...as good as Carbo's so im told but wear a bit quicker...should do you good if its more for general road use as they dont squeek like the carbo's do.

The Yellows are far superior from the Green and Reds as they are different compounds only cost £100 allround too.

I cannot sing the praises of carbotechs enough .simply awesome stopping power ,with the side effect of slightly more dust and some strange squeaking sometimes

I'd try and get some new brake fluid in there to start with, could be your main problem...

Will look into that - good thinking Leeroy.

Also I just noticed my typo in the title. Break pads - what a spaz!

You don't want/need to be looking at different brake (break lol) pads, you need to look at either renewing the fluid (as Leeroy pointed out) or simply bleeding the existing set up. A low pedal is indicative of air in the system, not "bad" pads/discs.

They were my thoughts too.

I simply said to renew the fluid as its probably not been done for a while, and in doing so you'll bleed the system anyway. :)

Hmmm, maybe Toyota changed them at some point then (like they've recently done with the oil filters, now made in China  ). Bought my car with less than 20K miles (with full history), so no reason to believe they'd been changed.

Just to say I've had my car 3 years and still have the same pads on  They were changed just before I bought the car so not 100% sure what they are but think they're Toyota. I've done about 30k miles and a mix of driving so they've done bloody well! I do use the engine to brake a fair bit (blipping and heal and toeing of course).

I bought some Yellowstuff pads about a year ago thinking I'd need them but they're still sitting in the box

...I spoke to 4 or 5 EBC / Black Diamond dealers when I was choosing originally and said I was comparing them along with these. And from memory, all but one shirked away and kind of said under their breath that they couldn't recommend anything other than the Carbotecs on stock disks for the money (bear in mind they were potentially losing a sale as well).

for the love of god don't put EBC pads in your motor!!! try a company called performance friction. they are without a doubt the best pads i've ever used. let's face it, they are used by a lot of the nascar teams, the porsche GT cup and some of the EDC and D1GP teams. if they're good enough for them, they're good enough for anyone. surprisingly inexpensive too. also try running them with castrol srf brake fluid (boiling point is 100 degrees higher than any other fluid on the market). hope this is of some use.
