[Mk2] [Turbo] intercooler advantages?!?

Post by steveo825 »

hey

am about to buy a xs power intercooler and would like to know the advantages.

i know it will pull in colder air than the standard one.

at the minute on my Rev1 turbo i am running 0.9bar of boost and have a departure 2 exhaust and apexi intake.

will i get any power gains?

thanks

i thought the gain was ok well for the money you pay for one anyway, it has a colder charge then the std intercooler anyway :eye: but iv heared loads of probs with fitment

depending on power goal go for a st205 chargecooler or the likes of greedy/hks/pp sidemount

io had one for about a year.

Be prepared to buy some decent hose clamps and hose's as the ones with the kit are shocking.

one of the support brackets always snaps off.

as a budget option its ok but not great.

go for a berk or greddy. or better a 205 CC which is the route im going at the moment.

you will also need to spend another £90 on a shroud and fan and blanking plate from gts chris...

new hoses and mikalor clamps, the extra expense doesn't make it financially so cheap.

best to keep an eye out for a decent second hand one, be a lot less hassle :thumleft:

They are fine. Got mine for £125, £30 for new clamps £20 for backing plate, re-used standard fan with sensor unplugged. £175 all in. As for the clamps, they are fine on 90% of the hoses and pipes only 4 that need changing, and you can re-use the standard jubilee clips, which have never been bettered in my opinion. You cant go wrong for that amount. And as for proof of gains there has never been a independant back to back test, so its all speculation about which is better, just more of the people with high power run the more expensive ones, but even then most run charge coolers. Obviously it wont be as effective as a charge cooler, but nor will any air to air heat exchanger.

I think the xs power intercoolers are a very good value upgrade as said above even with extras it’s less than £200. It’s also exactly the same design as the Greedy one (even if not quite so well made) so must offer similar gains. I would probably say it offers near similar performance to the others for a lot less £.
Shame none of the big bhp cars have never tried one as a back to back test with a more expensive intercooler.

Not being funny chaps but there's normally a reason why something is a lot cheaper than another similar item, i.e. build quality. If you had a big power car which you've spent a small fortune on, do you think you'd want to risk 'trying' a product which isn't that well made? Despite how it 'may' perform its just a risk that most wouldn't take.

What would be good is if someone with a standard/slightly modded car tried a stock/XS/GReddy back to back on a RR and see the difference! No I'm not volunteering  I have a 2nd hand GReddy and not that fussed about XS products :oldtongue:
