[Mk2] [Turbo] 272 cams gt30/40 turbo @1.9 bar ???

Post by gts 400 »

right guys new engine is going together soon BUT! do i stick with standard cams ? or put the 272 high lift ones in ? head has already been done with the 272 cams in ! got them cheap a while back ! but the chap who does my work said he has put them in his car and although the power is great ! it sure is late, and would make it a pig to drive on the road ?

also is a 3076r turbo a bit small for the cams ? got motec, water injection, the usual stuff! and head ported polished skimmed and big valves. will also have 70mm throttle body with it all !

last dyno on standard head and cams and 55mm throttle, was at 333 at hub and 366 torque a bit low for 1.9 bar ? but if i leave standard cams it will probably be 400 hp 400 torque i guess?

or do i change to a gt 30/40 ? with or without cams ?

anyway advice would be really good cheers ! :?

i run a gt3076 63 trim with 272 hks cam on intake and 264 on exhaust the 272 on intake should help turbo spool up my power is strong from 3500 on and get 1.9 bar boost by 3700rpm hope this helps..
mine is not fully mapped yet but last time on the dyno was 405 wheel horsepower... 450 flywheel horsepower and 380 lbft torque

i'm also on a 3076 with 272;s. quite happy with the power delivery on mine

BUT ...

i'm pretty sure Chirs or AndyF (maybe both) went back to stock cams from 272's and were happier (and got better results) with the stock-ers.

Gts 400 hundred was going to say that at 1.9 those figures seemed abit low !!! :)

Tarmac terrorist was going to go for the same staggered cam set up as you but was planning to go for 264 inlet and 272 exhaust have you got any dyno prints so i can have a look at :)

Yep, both went back to stock cams. Better drivability and mapped alot better too. Managed to get alot more advance in. Both cars are now running over 2bar of boost. Andys does very low 11's all day long. No idea of power as non of them have been dyno'd.

well might try the standard cams first and see what they are like ? i've been told the 272 are a nightmare to map ? especially when running in ?

the chap who sorts my car thinks the 70mm throttle body and the 1mm oversized valves and head work will make the difference over the cams?

he runs a gt35r turbo and 272's and said the power is all up the top at 6 and 7rpm and in town it could stall and will not move very well unless you drop a gear or two ? in other words bmw m3 ahead you have to drop 2 gears while he p1$$e$ off....?

need to hook up with you 272 boys really and go 4 a rip :-k

thanks for your thoughts on it though

personally unless going into the realms of GT4088r 's i wouldn't use any combo other than 264/264..

the 272's are designed to operate higher up in the rev range.. and if your either using a turbo thats going to be flowing its maximum by redline of 7500, or capping the redline at oem, then 272s aren't going to work as well as they should.

for instance, and this is the very basics.... you have a gt3076 and its band is 3700 - 7000rpm ...you then want a cam that will operate best within this rev range.. fitting a cam that operates between 5,500 & 8,500 would be pointless! that would be better suited to larger turbos that come on sing later in the rev range..

also remember, cams designed for larger turbos will increase lag.

take a look at this....
http://www.cj-motorsports.com/camtest.htm

also remember, HKS aren't the only cam manufacturer out there, and they are fairly expensive!

I'll be running a 272/272 GT4088R combo this time next month, well 2 weeks ! I'll give some feedback... At the moment, the T04R is all top end.. and it pulls strong for little boost pressure !! :D

Efficiency is everything ! :thumleft:
