[Mk2] [Turbo] Painting calipers

Post by James Junior »

I want to paint my brake calipers red so I plan to buy a set of axle stands, take my alloys off and give them a bit of an overhaul and then take the calipers off for a good brush down and a new lick of paint.

How easy is this for someone with little to no experience such as moi?

Are the calipers easy enough to remove and later replace?

I also want to replace my brake pads as the last owner fitted poor quality aftermarket parts and I want to give some Toyota stopping power back to the car.

Is this also relatively straightforward or should I leave this to someone who knows what they are doing?

At the end of the day, it involves jacking the car up, placing an axle stand underneath, taking the wheel off and using a paint brush.

Not hard at all.

Go for it mate. :thumleft:

yeah really simple mod, you dont have to take the caliper off, just wirebrush the calipers off, get rid of all the grease and grime, and paint them SIMPLE

Advice though, give it a good 3/4 hours for them to dry or your wheels and arches will get splattered
and yes thats a voice from experience lol :thumleft:
Make sure you post some piccys

Don't use normal paint for the calipers as it will flake off with the heat

Halfords do a caliper kit and prob ebay too with everything you need in the box (just make sure you get the right color) ;)

not that good a pic but you get the idea as said easy to do on the car invest in brake part cleaner if your kit doesnt come with any makes life easier :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

definately paint them on the car, you should be able to replace the pads without removing the calipers too (although its some times hard to get them round the disc again with fluid in them.) but if your doing all this its not much more difficult to take the calipers off for refurb, bleed the brakes and use uprated fluid....

i removed my calipers cleaned them with a wire brush and brake dust remover spray(good stuff) i also replaced all the seals a couple of the caliper pistons and painted them, all with no previous experience. :eye:

and it was worth it :thumleft:

(also i used halfords red caliper paint but in hindsight i'd use the spray stuff)

Why oh why do you guys do this!!

If you are going to paint them cos they look weathered or shabby then paint them black or gunmetal.

But red is rediculous IMO....what is the purpose?? To make people look at your brakes and see you have stock discs and stock calipers?!?! If you want red calipers then buy an aftermarket brake setup with some 4 pots  I just think it is blindingly obvious that the calipers are standard, so painting them red will not make them look much better. Stock calipers are an ugly sight.

If you are happy with it though i guess thats all that matters :thumleft:

I have agree with 2Crooky - gunmetal or silver looks so much more subtle and thought about imo :thumleft:

..and for an alternative paint you could use Hammerite, it's heat resistant and dries in less than half an hour and is a lot cheaper!

whats wrong with painting something that is rusty and unsightly, i dont think standard calipers look that bad i want to get cross drilled discs for mine and when i get some decent wheels, shocks and braided hoses i think it will look very nice behind the wheels :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

ps what is wrong with red still thats your opinion which you are welcome to, i suppose we all have our own tastes and if i like something i do it regardless of what people think and im not trying to make it look like a porche as most people say that, and a set of the brakes you are describing cost £1000-£1500 which i really could not afford with a wife and 2 kids on one income rant over i feel better now :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Yeah i painted mine red, think it looks great. You're not saying you've got better brakes than anyone else, it just tidys up an otherwise scabby area of the car.

i havent got standard discs or pads...

ithink rev 3 calipers with uprated discs and pads provide some amazing braking performance  (well mine do)

no need to spend ££££'s on a big brake kit!

red looks a lot better with my discs than rusty/dirty old calipers [-X

And after a cailper sticks

I think red's not too bad on a black car, but prefer chromed as mine were polished like the engine before they rusted through the lacquer and had to be painted. ](*,) ](*,)

Sorry Steve,

I would defo do yours in the same blue as the car, doesn't look right IMO in red on yours, but I know it's a hard colour to get hold of.

it was going to be blue, silver, yellow or red silver was boring, blue to washed out, yellow to in your face so red it was funny though most of the calipers ive painted in my time i done in gold, so given time i might go over in gold but for now looks a bit smarter than rust and at the time it was a cheap mod and on my budget, ive done quite well looked in my garage how much ive spent so far scary nearly £1000 on bits car stands me in £2200 no where near finished yet though :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Hi Steve,

Gold, :-k :-k mmmm, defo a colour to go with the blue, but dark blue and silver mixed should give you a close match. Just stick to the calipers though, someone on here attacked the underside of the car with a spare can of Hammerite gold paint and it looked soooo pikey.

Understand the money issues, that's why mine has been living in a garage for most of the last 3 years.

Had mine over 8 years now and it was standard apart from the alloys until it went in the garage. About £600 on bodykit parts and £500 labour later, although it's all one-off stuff apart from the Border front. All the engine work cost was alot of sandpaper and even more time.

Image

At least I can say that I was there all the way through working on the car rather than sending it off and getting it all back nicely done (f*ck I want lots of money so I could do that instead).

Just got a nice £150 bonus in my paypacket so I think I'll get myself one of those ebay Aeroware style spoilers and then throw some pics up for someone to do a good photoshop as I won't have the cash for the re-spray for a few months and I'd love to see it all black. I'm lucky that my family are mechanics and that ebay exists or i wouldn't be able to afford to run it at all.

8 years ago everything was soo expensive for these and there were virtually no cheap spares or kits, or anything modding-wise for the MR2.

theres a lot of satisfaction when you do stuff yourself, i to have a cousin who's a mechanic well he was, i now have to learn myself suspension stuff i can do but major engine stuff and gearbox is a no no, still just had clutch done so hopefully no big jobs to do in future, got a few mates i could ask about problems aswell so ok there, at the end of the day its all money this modding stuff mind you if money was no object you would finish them in no time and get bored very quickly so im glad it takes me time really :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
