Andy, Jeremy's our local guru on anything AW11 and electrical, don't think he's had the chance to play with an MS. (have you Jeremy?)

Are you still planning to market your 'adapted' AW11 ECU?

Chris

I only really know about the insides of the ECU BTW. I've got a lot of experience of owning and driving the MR2 (got my first one in 1994) but I am pretty hopeless at anything to do with anything mechanical. I can do routine servicing and replace the odd hose but that is about it.

I am still planning to sell some ECUs. I have been long term testing the mk1b version and I'm about to put a modded mk1a ECU in my car long term.

I'll have to get a move on though because the new MS system does look quite good! I'm also looking at the mk2 turbo ECU as I have recently managed to hack into this ECU.

I didn't realise MS was a DIY build. Maybe that's why it is so cheap to buy.

Not sure how wise it is for the average punter to plug in their soldering iron and build an ECU though. Probably best to get someone with experience (with ESD protection) to build it.

I'm afraid I'm not volunteering on this front as I don't have enough spare time!

I certainly wouldn't want to build my own, although plenty of people out there have with good results. You can get 'simulator boards' to send signals to the MS and check you've built it right but there's at least one person in the UK and numerous in the US who sell professionally built kits.

I don't know when the UMS will be available as they're still tweaking at the moment. The present MSII data is on http://www.megasquirt.info/ms2/

DIY-autotune.com sells them for $400 ish along with Innovate wide band O2 sensors and tuning kit.

Weren't we talking about cams?

13501-AE881-D Intake Camshaft $ 720.00
13502-AE881-D Exhaust Camshaft $ 720.00

Rather pricey!

ive got a pair of them sat next to me, the lobes are insane, theyre almost just full circles  youve got to take a hefty chunk out of the head just so they dont make contact in operation!! 320 deg intake and 304 exhaust with 11.0 and 10.7mm of lift respectively. you just cant fathom how awesome an atlantic motor sounds on these cams til youve heard it from 6 feet at 170mph :D

we should get together and have a chat...

Roger at Sabre doesn't always open out the chambers, he optimises them for the application, and he showed me a couple of heads where he had slimmed down(!!!) and reshaped the holes because they are so big, he said there would be no "inertial ramming" of the chambers and the volumetric efficiency of the engine would drop. VE is the % of the cylinder volume which actually gets in there at atmospheric pressure. IE 100% VE gives you 400cc of mixture at atmosphere. Car engines run under 100% and F1 cars way over, like 120%+ (sorry if you know that already)

He also showed me flow results from a bog standard 4AGE head (16v) and one he had modified, and the results were truly astonishing. He got more air in at a higher speed which is just what you want. FYI he reckons the 4AGE head is great.

Could you not go half a point higher on the CR? it is FREE power from tickover right through, and with a mappable ECU you can get rid of detonation totally? (oh, that's how polishing can help BTW, reduces detting) I have seen graphs where the CR was increased from 11.1:1 to 13.1:1 on NOT a 4AGE engine, and the improvement was basically 5bhp EVERYWHERE, it just clunked up the curve a notch (peak power was in the region of 130bhp)

Andy

the 4A-GE head is awful!! the largeport is just huge, way too big to be of any use on anything short of an Atlantic engine, and even then they are too big (hence they run smallports now and make 20% more power). the smallport heads are good, the largeports were a mistake that Toyota corrected fairly quickly, and then attempted to improve further with the 20V. they are almost unworkable, youre so restricted in where you can remove material
