[Mk2] [NA] What could possibly be wrong? gut feel- this is serious !!!!!!

Post by dinkyboy »

Ok, previous sunday took her out to take part in an urban rally nothing difficult, just driving around Bombay and then the following happened

1. at a signal the car would go into he first gear. no problom till now.
2. she would not go from the 1st to the 2nd gear.
3. we drove her for a kilometer in the 1st gear
4 there was some burning smell
5. then the car stopped moving.
6. we had to toe her home.

SYMPTOMS
1. she starts in one self, absolutely perfect. no problom till now.
2. put her in 1st and release the clutch, the car does not move as if she is still in the nuetral gear.
3. one can continue to rev her even after putting her in 1st gear, it is like being in nuetral gear and she does not move.
4. pressed the clutch pedel, it was normal. did not feel broken

what could possibly be wrong?

Possibilities:

Clutch has failed.
Gearbox has failed internally.
Drive shaft has come out of broken. All drive will be passed to the wheel with the least restriciton, ie the one with the broken drive shaft.
Gear linkage has failed and you're still in neutral, not in 1st 2nd etc.

Hope that helps?

The gear selector cables are to the bottom 'nearside' of the turbo, obv connected to the g/box via 2 linkages.

However, you would know if the gear selector cable come off, as the gear stick would feel very odd..

have you tryed pulling away in 2nd?

or even tryed moving the car in any other gear except 1st?

if it will not go in any gear and you are getting a burning smell, then i think it would be safe to assume its the clutch.

usually if a gear strips its teeth, you would hear them rattling about in the transmission casing.

what ever the problem tho, you will need to remove the gearbox... so if it is the clutch, you will know by looking at it.

Had exactly same symptoms and it was the clutch. Good luck with the mechanic :)

Sounds like the clutch hydraulics have failed. Either at the master or slave cylinder.
Get under the car - just behind the front engine mount you will see the slave.

If the piston doesn't move when someone presses the clutch - that's the problem.

common fault.

Sounds very much like the clutch itself has failed.

its pretty rare for the clutch to get to this state so quickly, sometimes an uprated one can shatter and jam...

its hard to say exactly what it is without seeing the car...

out off interest do you have the skills/time to change the clutch itself... :-k

its just that if you don't it would be wise to get a professional opinion... :thumleft:

OK so had a mechanic open her up. it is indeed the clutch. it is gone and need to be replaced. my questions

1. which is the best clutch to buy.
2. since i do not use her to race, should i buy a stock clutch or still go for a heavy duty one?
3. which is the best place to buy one. i checked on twos r us. they do not sell clutch
4. should i also replace the flywheel with a fidenza wheel? what will be the impact on the car?

IMPORTANT: will a 3sgte clutch fit on a NA engine. all the search i have done on the clutch has turned out results for 3SGTE engine which i recon is a turbo car and not a NA

thanks for all the replies.

1) Standard OEM clutch is fine, but do try to get one from Toyota.
2) You could go for a high spec one, but for an NA it's not worth it. You're better off getting a lightweight flywheel like Fidanza which you can have fitted at the same time as doing the clutch.
3) Toyota is your safest bet, not sure if you have dealerships in India!
4) Didn't notice this question till now lol, yes by all means get one if you can source one. Seeing as it is lighter it creates less resistance on the engine, so better throttle response, maybe even slightly improved acceleration.

No the Turbo and NA clutches are different. Go to Toyota. Alternatively there are generic manufacturers in the UK like Blueprint who make clutches.
