[Mk2] [Generic] Are trd kits the new Ferrari kits??

All i see now is trd kitted mr2's!

At one point they were something special but there are so many now it's boring!

If someone puts a ferrari kit on their 2 they get ripped so why is ok for trd kits?

What do the folk owning gen trd's think? Is it cheapening the image??

Not having a go at anyone in particular here but i thought it'd be a good topic.

TBH I've only ever seen one or two really good ones (Jimbo comes to mind), the rest just look like kitted cars.

But agree familiarity breeds contempt, i.e. it seems everyone wants to do this nowadays. Mostly not very well. A well done one will always look cool though IMHO, because it is an easy way to give an MR2 a super-car type presence.

And no I don't believe it effects any worth of the genuine ones, it's two different things really. Just like GT40 replicas never effect the value of the genuine ones - it might just be a little vin plate but it's the heritage and history that retains it's value. Having said that condition is an important aspect.

As Toni says though, its the heritage that makes the genuine ones so special!

a trd is still a toyota, a ferrari kit doesnt make it a ferrari, and putting all those ferrari badges on it is what most peeps dont like.....

Gotta say, when I first started reeading up on MR2s I did think of the TRD as something a bit special but I really don't any more.

I don't know enough about the real ones to be sure but I'd assume there's a reason why they're wider and that the wider panels are fabricated to achieve that purpose.
Whenever I see a car with a body-kit (of any sort) attached I can't help thinking, no matter how well it is built, that if you took all that stuff off again the car would be faster and handle better cos it'd be lighter.
Taking a perfectly serviceable MR2 and gluing additional panels to the existing ones seems pointless to me.

Gotta say, if I wanted to build something special that was MR2 based it'd have to be a replica of the Mk1 Group B car. That was an absolute animal!

that sounds similar to something you said about putting the turbo engine lid on an NA

but i have to agree on this one - even though the beefed up body looks good, nikk1877 is officially against adding that much extra bodywork to an mr2, and i'd also feel like a tit driving a lookalikey with silly paint and neons.

My N/A might get a turbo engine lid.

Admittedly, it'd be on an N/A V6 transplant, and only to fit the Rogue extractor fans if I thought they were needed.

I've got a tubby lid on my n/a but then I've also despoilered it. Am I trying to make it look like a tubby or the lower powered non spoiler coupe? Neither, I'm just modding it to look the best I think it can like those who add bomex, aeroware, border or other kits. In my view removing the spoiler betters the looks if combined with other mods to 'beef up' the rear and the lid is just one of them... custom made lower rear spats to follow...(photoshopped pic in my garage).

I agree with the comment about weight, all that fibreglass and filler must weigh a ton. Id rather spend the cash building a sleeper but I suppose it each to there own.

Tbh dude I'm the same... they are quite 'boxy'. Its difficult to better the stock shape as they did such a good job in the first place (says me who's changed the appearance ). I wouldn't say the TRD kit is a more attractive aesthetic, its a beefier more purposeful look I guess, which obviously some prefer.

At the same time, genuine TRDs are still very rare so I do admire them, especially the ones with genuine engine work.

ive seen a real one in the flesh and is very nice .
but got to agree i like the stock body better only improvement is side skirts and either rev2 or 5 spoiler.

Funny, I was gonna post to say the opposite. I always reckon the tubby engine cover looks a bit of a bodga, like they couldn't fit the engine parts in there properly.
Then there's the quality. An n/a engine cover feels much nicer than a tubby one.

Seriously, if I had a tubby I'd try and fit an n/a engine cover cos I reckon it looks slicker and it'd make for a nice sleeper.
