[All] [Generic] bodykit advice please

Post by benson »

Hi,
I'd be really grateful if any bodykit experts could advise me whether it is standard practice to bake aftermarket fibreglass skirts after painting and prior to fitting them?
The reason I ask is because my car went into the body shop to have some DC fibreglass skirts fitted. Apparently after painting and baking the paint started to flake, he said possibly due to the skirts being stored in the damp and therefore the moisture reacted with the paint. They have had to be restripped, baked for 24hrs to remove all the moisture and repainted again to great expense to myself and the bodyshop.
I have contacted the suppliers and let them know the problems, a reputable supplier over on ftooc. They couldnt believe that anyone would bake fibreglass as it causes it to distort and the paint to flake. Apparently painting them and putting them straight on would have been fine.
Was wondering if anyone in the know could clear this up for me? I'm supposed to be picking my car up tomorrow lunchtime and no doubt will be getting a hefty bill so any advice before then would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi, Sounds like you are having the wool pulled over your eyes mate. I have 19years experience in Designing & Manufacturing of my own Composite parts & have my own body/paintshop too, so I fit & paint all my products. It sounds like a classic case of not preping the parts properly 1st & it is this that has caused the paint to lift etc. This lifting would happen on a steel panel too, if not preped properly to take the paint.

The "Stored in dame place etc" is rubbish.. [-X

I never have to bake fibreglass parts prior to painting them.

I hope this helps?

i agree, they have made a mistake prepping the kit(ie cutting corners or rushing the job) and the paint stripping is all there fault. it is fine to bake the fibreglass panels for 40 Min's to aid drying properly and the main reason its gone like that is that they have not primed it properly or cleaned it before priming or maybe not using plastic primer or wrong mix of primer / paint etc...refuse to pay for there mistake and threaten them with legal ramifications if they keep blaming the kit...its not on and it`s not your fault

sorry about this but! when you say flake do you mean like orange peel? if so then read the bellow, if not skip the paragraph bellow! I was just a bit unsure as to what you meant by flaking!

If the paint has started to flake "orange peel" its usually because them have mixed the Paint and thinners to the wrong ratio. i have stored bumpers ect in damp places ect and when i have come to paint then they have never flaked. when i have painted some thing and it has stared to flake/peel its because i have mixxed to little thinners with the paint!

But if its not orange peel sort of flake!

When ever we bake cars everything comes off so that its just the bare shell thats in the oven, all of the lights bumpers door handles ect come off. But i am not a expert and i wouldnt know if this would cause distortion! I just know that i dont put anything apart from the shell in the oven!

But like previously said, i think it has a lot to do with corners being cut when it came to prepping them, 85% if more of the final finish is in the correct preping of the pannels, if they are not preped properly you wont get the final finish that you were after.

I would slap them in the face and tell them to sort out the problems which they themselfs have caused! It has nothing to do with how the item was stored, and even if it was surley they would have picked up on this when they came to prep the item and corrected it!

Although i am not a expert, i am just sharing a view from my very limited (compared to 19yrs of exsperiance)knowlage of paint/bodywork!

Hope it gets sorted out though!

hmmm...interesting read all of that, thanks for all your help. Well to be fair to the guy he didnt charge me anthing over the original quote and now that I've got my car back it looks fantastic :D
As for what the paint looked like, I've only got a small photo of what happened which I cant really tell whether it looks like orange peel or not. However from what you guys have said it does seem as though it was an error on his part. Oh well all sorted now and I've learnt a bit along the way :)
