[Mk2] [NA] My Ongoing Project - Rev1 N A

Post by absvicandmark »

I bought the car about 6 months ago off my dad for £1k. He only bought it a month b4 me from ebay as a run around for £1800.Yeah, I know he got conned!I MOTd it to make sure I had a good base to start from and it flew through with the only problem being a bolt missing from the drivers seat (note the buckets). Not bad for a 17 year old car!!

Over the last couple of months i started buying bits for it and after looking at various forums I started to get an idea of what I wanted and what I could afford.(Im on a very strict budget!)
All the gear I bought I got from ebay so I will list what I have so far bought and how much it cost me.
K&N Filter - £12.50
Fold Out TV & DVD - £100
10" Sub & Box - £10
2 x Amps - £14.50
4 x 17" Momo Arrows & Brand New Tyres (Slightly Scuffeed) - £170
Toms Scoop - £120
Front Bomex Bumper - £80
Rear Veilside Bumper - £80
Veilside Skirts - £80

All these costs include P&P where need be too.

Last week, with the help of this forum, I started to install all the bits I had.
Note - Im not a mechanic and my previous experience was as far as to wire in a stereo.

This is what state the car is in now (Hope this works as never hosted pics b4).

I shoved the old indicators back in just so I can drive it!

I dont think ive done too bad a job considering Ive never done anything like this before!

Im gona leave the standard rev1 spoiler on there as I quite like it and goes with the original curves of the car. Prob not to everyones taste but I dont like massive big spoilers!

I have one question - when I installed the K&N filter it came with instructions. But I had to follow the instructions for a rev 2/3 engine as my engine didnt have an airflow meter (Or what I could figure out anyway!). How can I tell if it is a different rev engine.

My to do list so far:

Get new number plates made up!
Lower it
Fit clear lights front
Fit Rev 3 Lights Rear
Fit new exhaust
Spray bodykit (And fill where appropiate)
Spray whole car (was gona go orange and blend it) *If funds allow!*
Refurb Wheels
Fit short shifter kit & New Gear Knob & Gaiter

Im not sure whether to mesh up the air scoop holes in the skirts or not as I quite like them the way they are!

I have got the next two weeks off so weather permitting might be able to get some of these done.

Note to mods - I thought of putting this in the project cars section but I thought as this car is a "budget" project, it didnt warrant going into that section compared to some of the monsters and finishes of the excellent cars on there. Please feel free to move it if need be.
May replace seats back to standard
Get a V6 and turbo or supercharge it (*When funds allow!*)

Cheers for reading guys!

Total fair play bud!

I'm a huge fan of the bomex front end, really like it. Pound for pound you have definately had some bargains.

Keep it up, and keep us posted of progress...

Inspiration you dont HAVE to spend £££££££ to get a car looking good.

I've done my last two cars on very strict budgets and both managed to end up in Car magazines.

Picked up my MR2 last night and i'll be going along the same lines you are. Keep it up mate and keep the photos rolling in!

Fair play bud, always got respect for those who have a bash themselves.keep it up mate.
Also yours is a rev 1 with the 3sge NA engine which as no afm, turbo's have the afm, and(but not sure)think the earlier crappy 3sfe(pultry power) had one aswell.

really nice looking car for 1500

really nice choice of components - but tbh - i dont like scoops :-/

well done there

good luck with th painting. - sincerely best wishes.

btw... go to demon tweeks motorsports division and get some cushion inserts for the buckets. sparco do them in black, and that would really nicely tie your seats into th rest of the interior.

plus if you know someone handy with a needle and thread, or hell you could even do this yourself. you could take the blue cloth from the center parts of the buckets, ie whats now covered by the sparco cushions, and cover your door cards in it really pucka job then.

if you get a similair blue metallic and spray your hard plastics in it, this gives you a really nice black / blue interiour at less than a hundred pounds, and it will tie nicely to the cars current blue and contrast stunningly with the orange when you get around to it.

rookie - thanks for the tips. Ive been thinking about doing something else with the interior as the buckets are a bit hard for long journeys. My mum and nan are trimmers so was gonna get it done. Ive been contemplating spraying the interior too but didnt want it to look too chavy!

Also i was wondering whether to keep the scoop too. Ive always wanted one but now i got it im not sure. Makes the k&n better though! Im thinking maybe another scoop on the other side will help but im worried it will look too chavy!

Its just finding paint round my area. Halfords only stock one or maybe 2 cans at a time and want £11 to mix up more. I need another 6 cans. Gotta go chippenham today so hopefully pick up a couple more. But while the weathers good I wanted to get it done!

Thanks for all the nice comments guys and r post more pics when Ive made a bit more progress.

When you say Halfrauds will mix it up for you, do you mean literally? Only i thought they just sold set colours off the shelf that you need the usual paint code details to bag the right shade. If they do make it up to spec that could be useful for my faded red car..

True. But even closeish is better than way off. So if i take my fuel flap in they can have a crack at mixing up the same red?

oooooooh i say, what a nice looking back end you have sir 8-[

jokes aside.the rest isnt going to make sense as i've got a collicy baby in my other arm demanding a lot of attention

anyhows the cushions - http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ ... e=S/S1041B - shouls add a bit more padding aswell. if not they can easily be stuffed and further bulked out....

if you do coordinate doorcards and plastics with your seats in a subtle tone it wont look chavvy - but mind and take the effort to flatten all your plastics and make is smooth gloss finished.... and it will be class not krass.

a while ago i did some plastics in another car in silver without flattening it - looked cack #-o

if getting a halfrauds mixfor the interior, ad a pearl or flip etc???

managed to get a bit more done b4 the heavens opened. Side skirts need laquering and the underneath of the bumper doing. Also, how can I get a better smoother look. Ive heard about flatting it out? Whats this process and how do I go about doing this. Im currently doing as follows:
1. Rub down to key the surface and clean
2. Primer then rub down with fine and clean
3. Colour then after a day rub down with 1200 wet and clean
4. Clean again and laquer.

Looks good mate might get the weather to finish tomorrow with luck
Have you tried rubbing the paint down with rubbing compound before lacquer?
you mentioned earlier swapping seats for leather
