[Mk2] [Turbo] A bit of help needed

Post by Leezon »

Hey guys, ive just bought Carly's MR2 Turbo and love it! :D

Only problem is i cant get the rear boot to unlock with the key she has given me, it just wont turn. Any ideas?

Also the ariel wont go down, even if i do turn the radio off before the ignition.

Thanks
Leon.

Why don't you ask her about the key?

So the ariel is always up? Is it connected to the back of the head unit?

I have asked her about the key and she says she never used it on the boot, only ever used the release pulley.

Im not sure about it being connected to the head unit. When we went for the test drive it was down and she turned the head unit on and the ariel came up.. but its not gone down again.

Key: try lots of WD40, and lots of wiggling, it might work free.

Ariel: then the motor might be knackered or power intermittent/faulty.

I hear some people have wired a manual switch to extend and retract the ariel..

There are two keys for the MR2s, a drivers key and a passenger key.
The driver's key unlocks everything, doors, boot and glove compartment.
The passenger key will not unlock the glove or the boot.
Don't keep trying it in the lock or it will bend and break.
If you got 2 keys with it, try the other key.

My brother had the same problem with his boot lock. In the end he bought a new lock cylinder from Toyota (about £25) and posted it to 3S with a spare key to get them matched up.

But only the driver's key will start the car. Seeing as he has only one key and can drive the car, I guess this is not the issue

I'd say the bootlid was replaced at some point, so it has a different key, which may not have come with the lid if it came from a breakers.

No. The passenger key will also start the car.

You sure? Not trying to be a smart ass, just curious. My parents have an avensis and there's a grey key which only unlocks the doors. Doesn't start it or open the glove box. Maybe it's a valet key or something :-k

Yes, thats a valet key. The passenger key is there so they can steal your car and smash open the bot and glovebox at their leisure, rather then unlocking it! I use my passenger key for the MK1 as its less worn and starts the car easier, without rattling the key around, but it means I have to pop the boot from inside.

I always presumed they were the same thing, something new learned :thumleft:

Or see if someone like Rogue or 3S are breaking one and can provide you with complete locks and keys and replace them that way.

Even better :thumleft:

Could try the breakers on here too, and a guy called MR2-Ben in affiliates...
